Okay guys, for the past three days I've had no sleep. My head hurts morning and night . . . why? I am freaking out over this exam I have tomorrow and Saturday. I can't get to sleep earlier than 2 am, I wake up at 8 am . . . I am trying not to let it get to me. The only respite I had was a brief moment of wine-drunkenness last night during a study session. I have tried:
Nyquil (but I get the hangover) Shots of Vodka (but it woke me up more) Tons of water (it just makes me pee) Dark chocolate (nice, but no) A substance that will not be named (it mellowed me out, but I still didn't get to bed until 2 am) Naps (but I get sleep hangovers and then I don't get to sleep until late) Exercise (but the headache gets worse) I can't figure out if the headache is because I am tired or stressed and I am trying everything to no avail. I need to get rid of the headache and I need decent sleep for my exam tomorrow. Help me.

I used to have unbelievable insomnia, I would go for days. The ONLY thing that worked for me was melatonin. Unfortunately it takes a few nights to really start working. Sounds like you need a quicker fix.

Eat a big, Thanksgiving style meal, with lots of turkey, then try to watch a football game. Guarantee you will fall asleep in your chair with your pants undone. Tryptophan kicks ass.

arrettinator, the irony of your answer followed by your sig is funny. I have 2-month old and I am constnatly tired. Funny how romp in the sack will make you tired for the next 15 months.

The first thing that came to mind when I read mac's post was, "Spend one night at my house." Of course meaning she'd be exausted from the baby.

Try yoga... seriously. I have had trouble sleeping from time to time, and I've found yoga works really well. I actually have a PM Yoga video I picked up from Gaiam that often does the trick. Good luck!

In reply to: A good romp in the sack always tires me out. My daughter was about 6 1/2 months old when we started round two. A newborn and a 15 month old. Now that's living. How about it Ryan? You ready to crank it up a notch?

Heck no. We want the first one to be able to tell us what she needs before we have another. Plus my wife has to have some tests that involve radiation, so it's out of our minds for at least 2 years.

Ryan, good luck with the tests. Mac, try some relaxation exercises. six hours of sleep is really enough, but stress is not good. Take a long easy walk. You either know it by now or don't, so forget that part. Leave the booze and drugs alone til after the test, then celebrate. Good luck with both the test and the relaxin.

chocolate actually wakes me up. do somethin that will really tire you. like go for a LONG swim or something like that. theres a recipie i heard with green tea but i havent tried it out yet... first you pour boiled water over it for 3 minutes, then throw that away, then pour boiled water over same leaves for another three minutes. the idea behind this is that caffeine is mostly extracted in the first minutes, followed by tanine that has a calming effect.

If you are up for more of the substance not to be named, get really really cheap brick substance not to be named, and consume around 7 or so. I never had a problem with cheap stuff knocking me the eff out. Personally, it always worked better for me as a "downer" mixed up with a bit of cigarette tobacco, and maybe chase with gin or whatever...makes the hits a lot harder, but when I crashed a few hours later, I could barely move. It's not a perfect sleep, but a lot better than a drunken passout. Just hydrate well in the morning. Percocet and alcohol. An extensive day climbing with a beastly hard cooldown(won't help you now though). A lot of turkey. This has all worked for me in the past, and I rarely get to sleep before 2 or 3 normally. I didn't have the headaches you do though, so any of things could very well make you worse. Most of the "artificial" things take a little while before you crash, so taking them right when you want to sleep probably wouldn't work. If all else fails, just remember that it doesn't really matter. As long as you'll still have a home and food assuming whatever you are stressed about turns out in a way not optimal, then you'll turn out ok.

Okay, here is where I get outted as the hippie freak that I really am. I have been lucky enough to inherit migraines that are triggered by a flash of light and cause me to go blind for 20 minutes, pain that sometimes lasts up to 72 hours, sometimes cause my pupils to differ in size and just plain leave me useless and miserable. Since none of the prescription meds work and all of them have nasty side effects, I am left to my own devices. Here is what I do: I have a plastic ice mask that I generally wear over my eyes (if I can stand it) and on my head. I focus on taking deep breaths through my nose and exhale through my mouth and begin to meditate to try to escape my pain. I will also chant 'ohm' (yes, I seriously really do this) on the exhale. Last time I did this after a migraine attack, I was actually able to sleep. I have also read about increasing vitamin B2 (riboflavin) in your diet to reduce migraines. I have also heard that an herb called feverfew works. For myself, I know that my headaches are triggered by eating junk food, specifically MSG. So, by keeping a healthy diet and avoiding flashing lights, I only get a few per year now. Anyway, I hope you feel better! I can sympathize with any head pain. Try the ohm thing. It works for me!

don't try drugs like benadryl, nyquil or the like.........for some people, like me, they act like speed. the best advice i ever got was from a friend who was into yoga and Indian studies. the pm yoga/relaxation was excellent. she also recommended warm milk, sounds cheezy, but it does work also add hot bath and no stimulation like tv.........read a good book!!!!

Are you a caffeine junkie? If so, have you had your dose? That could do the headaches. For me, corny as it sounds, I put earplugs in and lie in bed, eyes closed, and try to visualize pure blackness. Any thoughts, about tests or work or kids or "honey do" is light and I imagine physically "pushing" it out of the black feild. Nothing is allowed but the black. After about 10 minutes I generally relax and see just the black and soon after I sleep.

if you can get to a doc today (probably too late now) or rustle up some from a friend, try ambien--it won't leave you feeling drugged in the morning. good luck with your comps--you'll feel SO good in a few days! :)

Kristin, Try taking some Excedrin, and resting in a cool, dark room. Don't move your head, and maybe a cool damp cloth would help. Nighty-night. Good luck, kick ass!
