Hi I have been indoor climbing for about 3 months now and LOVE IT. But can't help the feeling that I need to be expereincing this OUTSIDE. I live in Kentucky and spoke to some guys at the gym about climbing an easy route to get started outside. He recommended I top rope. Which is what he said they do at the gym?? :? Anyway I was wondering HOW I would top rope outdoors....in the gym the rope is wrapped around a welded metal pole. Any advice? Thanks!!! :D

basically, there are anchors at the top of the cliff. since you are a newbie you won't be leading the route so it'd be good to find someone experienced to lead it for you (get the rope up there) or in some areas you can just walk up the side, set the rope through the anchors (using your own carabiners or draws or slings or whatever) and then rappel or walk back down and climb away! don't just go out and do it on your own, find someone who knows how, they'll teacch you some high quality safety hopefully. good luck, outdoors is SO much better, happy (and safe!) climbing!!

take a class, specifically an anchoring class. It'll teach you the basics of placement of gear for anchors. If you can't afford that, ask someone who you trust to take you out and teach you. Just don't go all willy nilly and try and try and wing it. Read some books (freedom of the hills, more climbing anchors, etc) My best advice is the class, I just took one and my confidence and skill in building an anchor improved greatly. good luck stay safe.

Typical rc.com response: Ok, first you need to get a big steel pole... Time saving real response: Find some people that know how to setup a toprope outside and go with them. Enjoy climbing. Later on, when you're more experienced, have them show you what to do. Do it under their supervision for a while.

Top rope: setting up a rope from fixed anchores or natural protection that hangs down from a single pitch (<30m) route just like the gym. What you need in the beginning: 1) AN EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGABLE PERSON TO GO WITH YOU 2) Your own harness and shoes 3) A belay device, such as an ATC. You also need to learn some skills: - How to properly use your belay device - How to handle a rope (preventing rope drag, keeping it clean, etc) - How to build anchors off of bolts - How to rapell. Your experienced friend will show you what to do! Finally, to emphesize, EITHER FIND A KNOWLEDGABLE PERSON TO TEACH YOU, OR TAKE AN OUTDOOR CLIMBING COURSE.... DO NOT TRY THIS STUFF FOR THE FIRST TIME ALONE!

JET PACK they should sell them at the local climb shop but you need to buy the jp37549362 model as opposed to the jp3887540 model that one is shit it only puts 3000000 lbs of thrust the jp37549362 model puts out triple that plenty of power to get you up that 60' cliff and speed is the key the crap one only goes mach 153.9 the good one does mach 155 oh and the crap one has a tendancy to burst into flames while jp37549362 is cold fusion powered so it is safe good luck and dont be a mach 153.9 fire ball  you get that bad boy on and you will be able to top rope like a mother the cold fusion fuel is kind of radioactive and melts ropes and makes you grow a tail and glow in the dark but hope the tail is prehensile then you can pull that hot pink rout in the gym you have been lookin at Good Luck :boring: gee isn't this reminisent of ask the n00b :deadhorse:

In reply to: I live in Kentucky... Go to the Red River Gorge but Do Not lead the 'easy' 5.9 to the left of Bandolier at Torrent Falls. It gets pumpy at the top and several noobs have taken bad falls. I was climbing there one day and this girl kept hmming and hawing about doing it as her first lead. She ended up trying it after we left for the day.... we saw her at Miguel's in a cast later that weekend. Some of the less popular crags have some better top-roping options if you go with someone experienced. I don't particularly enjoy them, but if you have someone to lead for you then check out Sunbeam and Moonshine at Military wall. Don't be afraid to try the hard stuff, most of it is good holds but just pumpy.

1. get really good at belaying in the gym 2. find an experianced climber 3. offer to buy him pizza at miguels in exchange for showing your the ropes (forgive the pun) 4. watch everything s/he does, ask questions and have fun at least that's what i did
