It's not. but seriously, mothers will worry. no matter what you 're doing. just tell her you're being safe and more people die on highways than in the mountains

Take her climbing. My mom got into climbing around the same time i did. She owns more and better gear than I do. I've been trying to convince her that my harness is unsafe making climbing for me dangerous so I could guilt her into getting me a new one, but it's not going so well. I'm a grown man and I should buy these things myself, but I'm also a poor man with no pride who will take any free gear he can manage.

tell her you are "going camping", or "spending the weekend with a friend" it works, but my dad (a former climber) knows better.

I wouldn't know, since my mom is the one who got me into climbing. Taking her climbing is a good idea, but it also might just scare her more. So, take her climbing in a gym, you can't lose.

I haven't, but we've got an understanding.....I only tell her about my climbs AFTER i'm finished, not before I go. she was sick and tired of worrying about me when i went,,,,hence the compromise

I have a friend who is about to graduate high school. His mom is not crazy about him climbing. She doesn't forbid it, but won't support it. He asked for a rope for graduation. She said no. His second option wa a mountain bike for orienteering. They may go for that one, but I'm thinking, flying through the woods looking at a map and compass? Sounds more dangerous to me. One time another friend and I were climbing on a column of a bridge that never go t finished. It's a popular spot in this city. We only lead the first climb to the top then tope rope everything else. I was standing on the base of the column which was about a foot and a half wide behind me was about a 3 foot drop to a river but there were small trees growing up next to the base. My friend with the mom shows up, with his mom. He heard we were climbing and I guess wanted to show her how safe it was. From my point of view I could only see the possibility of reaching the first hold was jumping. I went for it and missed. Shocking I know. I landed on the ledge and started to tip backwards. I yelled for my friend to take up the slack but he was totally not expecting me to fall... um... from.... the ground.... Yeah, I got sticks all over my backside, ripped up t-shirt. Basically very embarassing. Pete and mom left. I'm fairly sure Pete is forever grateful to me for showing his mom the proper tree save technique. So you can go a long way to keep your mom from finding out how dangerous climbing is if you keep her away from me.

Climbing is only as safe as you are. How much confidence does your mother have in your judgment and actions?

In reply to: How do you convince your Mum that climbing is safe? By not dying or any of your friends dying when you go out climbing is a good start.

you'll never convince mom that rockclimbing is safe PERIOD. And that's coming from a mom who climbs. seriously, moms worry about everything.............my kids are teens and i still worry about them when they leave the house, doesn't matter what they do. But, don't let it stop you from following your bliss. Be mature when discussing such risk activities. Just be a good son/daughter, phone home every once and a while and like Ren said, only discuss the climbs afterwards and remember, wear clean underwear in case of accident!

Well, I just tell her I'm safe and I explained to her how much weight all my gear will hold and she doesn't care to much anymore =). I'm just not supposed to tell her about my climbs lol. Darnit, so much for telling her I fell on a black alien and it ripped out lol. Good luck with your mom. Farewell, God Bless! ~Tragic

  My wife is mid-thirties, a doctor who is board-certified in internal medicine, and her parents positively refuse to allow her to climb!! :? So what does this respected member of the community do? She LIES! When we've been climbing, she just calls it "hiking", but leaves out the vertical part. Fortunately her parents live 1000 miles away and seldom come to visit, but when they do, we have to hide all the gear, books, and pictures

i think by now u get the clue that no matter what you say to her shes not gonna like it. my mom gets scared to death everytime i tell her im going climbing. dsont matter if its to the local crag or a long trip she always wants to know exactly where im gonna be, and when im coming back. thats what mothers do. be lucky your mom cares, not all people can say the same. climb on! You don't. Just do your best to not let them know about the dangerous stuff you do, and tell them stories that make it sound like childs play.
