I have a very personal reason as to why I climb. My wife (soon to be ex) of 9 years (been together 15) managed to hook up with an old high school boyfriend through Classmates.com and cheated on me. They have had a semi secret relationship since 2000! And she decided she wanted to spend Christmas with him and his family in 2004. I found climbing as an outlet to keep my mind off of her and to keep my mind occupied. I have been climbing since February this year and it is by far the best thing that could have ever happened to me. It is safe to say climbing has saved my life and kept me from going down a self destructive route of dealing with my pain. I have met some of the most amazing people from the climbing community. Everyone I have met has been more then willing to teach a newbie and I have progressed due to the climbers I associate with now. Now I have the same desire, and have recruited friends that did not climb and shown them how to be safe. I started a group get together at stoney point every Tuesday after work and we climb till dark and then all go out as a group for food and drinks. I go out on the weekends as much as possible when work does not get in the way. Climbing is all I think about now. I am hooked big time. I started to lead a few weeks ago and lead up to 5.8 and top-rope mid 5.10's. I did my first trad climb at Tahquitz and now I need to start building a rack. Oh on a side note, she realizes she screwed up big time and wants to come home now, but I refuse. In the time we have been apart, I have realized I really want this new life I have made for myself and not willing to give up my new friends and passion for climbing for her! Thanks again climbing community! You rock, Marc Webster

Mark that was a top post mate. I started out because my flatmates at the time were climbers, and they taught me all the things I had to know about styles, techniques and knots. It is cool having a climbing crew. Hey and way to go with sorting out the ex wife. That would have screwed most people up, but you survived it and came out kicking ass. --raises his drink to Mark Webster----"Salute".

20% to learn about myself 20% to improve myself (body and mind) 20% to hang out and meet cool people (have you found that the asshole ratio is a little lower in climbing? maybe it's the trusting you're life thing) 20% to be in beautiful places 10% because i'm a masochist and 10% so I can feel macho doing one of the three truly manly sports (sorry ladys)

It's the only activity I've found in a while that clears my head of all the worry, the negativity, stress, self-doubt, and sorrow I accumulate in other parts of my life. It's so beautifully simple that it's brilliant fun.

40% - Because climbing is fun. Nuff said. 40% - The mental challenge to execute the moves, its a turn on. Vertical ballet of sorts. 10% - The thrill/fear of being up high. 10% - Keep in shape. I'm a couch potato kinda guy. Climbing is the only thing that gets me out of bed early in the morning every weekend, and makes me push my body to its limits, without anyone asking me to. Its a godsend.

My brother-in-law and I *just* started so my reply probably doesn't count for much, but... 40% We both have always loved to play on rocks and climb things. Any thing really. (trees, signs, stripper poles..) 30% We aren't afraid of heights and are sometimes oddly seduced by them. Not much better than sitting at the top of a mountain! 20% We LOVE to be outdoors. 10% rock-hard forearms are the bomb!

i don't know why....that cannot be explained...i just am...no thing more to it...a simple concept but not to non-climbers theres many things about climbing, but no way in hell would i called them "reasons"......i think multi-pitch alpine in shitty weather is cool...there's some about smashing a piton.....the noise an ice axe gives off....the testicular feelings after stonking a #10 hex in the most bomber way....sandbagging your partner after giving him wrong beta leading him into a crux.....doing a walk off at night.....a stout after a hard day of cranking....cleaning a route from the 70's and climbing it....flirting with some french-canadian rock hotties...showing a first timer how to tie in....teaching someone our/my art.....doing a FA.......standing on a summit with all this, i still dont know why....all i know is; i just am...i'm content with that..

I can't really break this down into percentages. My love for climbing is not about statistics....but I will name a few reasons. * I love climbing because it gives me an adrenaline rush * the mental challenges I need to over come on difficult trad terrain * The way I move my body with the rock * the complete focus I have on nothing else but what is in front of me * the feeling you get when you get to the top of a climb and the amazing as your reward. *sorry to say but in a predominantly male sport, I love it when I can get up something a guy can't!

i climb because i can;t think of a reason not to climb. I climb because i enjoy being outside. i like to teach my friends something bad ass, if it looks cool to look up at it's three times as cool to look off of and 2 times as cool to look off the top of it, and it scares me.

I climb because, 10% Because it keeps me in shape. There is no beter work out than rock climbing. For the body it tones almost every muscle in your body. Stretching them and building them beyond what anything else can do. But not only that, it is also a great work out for your mind. To climb you need a certain level of mental copasity. As you get better and climb in different ways your mental abilties increase with the increasing chalange. To climb rock is a great thing, it pushes ones mental and phyisicle abilities to the limit and beyond if one pushes ones self to acheive. 90% for my soul! I am a total soul climber. I climb becuase I love to climb! It frees me of worries. When I am on the rock, any hiegth, any type of climb, roped in or not its just me and the rock. It gives me time to think and I learn a lot about myself therefore I can find things that I would like to improve and become a better person. In other words I climb for the climb and nothing more. Climb on Chris

I climb because it is me and the rock. Not me and bills, the cellphone, 5 traffic tickets I've yet to take care of, and the clean white lab with no windows that I work in 8hrs each day. It's me and nothin' but my nice cool Texas limestone friend that has never had an expectation... Climbing is an exit where I can get away from "normal" life. I climb almost 100% for the physical and mental challenge that is responsible for taking me oh so far away from everything else.....

I climb because... 5% I love the sound aluminum gear makes clinking around on my harness 3% I love the feel of a new rope 4% I love tying the clove hitch The other 87% is made up of the standard exercise/view/adrenaline/gear/adventure/etc. that I'm sure other people have mentioned already (didn't read the thread).
