I broke a couple of ribs playing rugby and I'm just about ready to hit the gym. I've done some bouldering recently but it was a little too painful. Any ideas on where to get climbing specific weights programs to work at while I heal?

OK, so probably anything involving your core is out, right? I would suggest experimenting with different upper body exercises like shoulder flys, bicep curls, etc etc with free weights first. If this is too painful, I would suggest then finding one of those "weight machines." This is bound to be comfortable at least, due to the lack of need for your body to provide stabilization (the very reason its a poorer choice for climbers). You can probably find some cardio, as well, that isn't painful. Perhaps stationary bike (High RPMS, low resistance). I would look at this time not so much as building climbing specific strength, but moreso as getting into a super conditioned shape to be able to blast off from once your ribs feel better. Good luck!

ribs are important. find a sports coach, or pay a bit of money and get a professional to inform you of what to do. You dont wanna stuff yourself up even more, without realising. Some exercises may feel ok, but may actually cause stress of your ribs which means they wont heal properly.

core exercises with broken ribs would be excruciatingly painful. Hell, any time I've broken ribs, BREATHING was painful. They're an annoying injury since you can't do much for them but wait for them to heal. I'd say don't push yourself, figure out what doesn't hurt, and go from there.

I broke a rib back in Feb, snow boarding. I went climbing that same night, and the following morning I could get out of bed. Very painful. I reckon you're looking at 8 weeks to get back to anything like normal. As the guys have said, anything that doesn't involve your core. Legs , biceps, forearms, maybe shoulders. DEFINITELY NO SIT-UPS!!!!!! Good luck

Look into the 'Workout from Hell' which is a workout that John Long endorses. It is tough and grueling but "it works everytime". Best of luck with your recovery. Cheers, Jeff Raymond

While the benefits of weight training for climbing are debatable, weight training can be used to prevent injury by strengthening muscles that climbing misses, thereby keeping balance in your body. The shoulders are a good example and you can look here: http://www.climbingfilms.com/videos/videoInfo.php?vidID=192&type=13 for some good exercises. I have to pay special attention to this because I broke my clavicle and now my left shoulder feels more awkward then my right when I'm doing certain moves. anyway good luck recovering.
