that almsot all the info in the route database seems to be copied almost word for word from the local guidebooks? Seems kinda pointless to do so, as when searching the route database I would rather see personal descriptions and what other encountered on their climbs and not verbatium from the guidebook author.

Examples? I don't do that. Thanks for the unsupported rant, though...

I find it hard to believe that "almost all" route descriptions were copied from guidebooks, but even if they were, I don't really see anything wrong with that. Not everybody has access to any given guidebook, especially in the case of ones that are out of print (Dixie Cragger's Atlas, RRG guide) and really hard to track down. Anyway, the place to add personal notes on what you encounter on a climb is in the recorded ascents, not the route description. JL

(In the interest of full disclosure, quite a bit of material on a section of the database was copied nearly word for word from a guidebook I published, but I gave the poster permission to use my material).

In reply to: Err, how 'bout copyright laws. Okay, you got me there. If someone's going to copy descriptions from guidebooks, the least they could do is paraphrase. On the other hand, if I were the author of "Climb the right edge of a huge, pebbly flake, then up the finger/hand crack at the top" (from the excellent Dixie Cragger's Atlas) and somebody copied it verbatim, I wouldn't be overly concerned that my creative juices were being ripped off. :) JL
