Raptor closures a success All city of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) cliff nesting raptor closures, including the Bald Eagle closure at Amphitheater Rock, will be lifted beginning Friday, July 15. These areas are closed seasonally each year to protect nesting and roosting raptors and their fledglings. Over 24 raptors fledged including Peregrine Falcons, Prairie Falcons and Golden Eagles. “We are pleased to have had another successful season,” said Ranger/Naturalist Rick Hatfield. “The work of over 50 volunteer monitors and the cooperation of the public, members of the climbing community, local climbing shops, the Access Fund and the Flatiron’s Climbing Council has resulted in another successful cliff nesting season.” Seasonal closures, typically enacted February 1 through July 31, have been in place since 1986. The closure of these areas provides a safe, protected nesting place for eagles, falcons, and osprey. The areas are monitored by volunteers, who report on nesting activity and success throughout the season. Some OSMP areas adjacent to the Boulder Reservoir remain closed for osprey. Bat closures on OSMP lands remain in effect until October 31. For more information on raptors, wildlife, and programs and activities offered by OSMP, visit www.osmp.org.
