Hey, sign me up! I am a climbing noobie, but it'd be great to meet some other climbers in the area. I will probably have an extra seat in my truck in anyone needs a ride. I'll be leaving from Glendale (West Vally, Phoenix). Mike

In reply to: the other option is to get someone in Flag to reserve some spots at the Pit. That is not a recommended option given the control freak petty tyrant and his wife who currently host the campground.

That is not a recommended option given the control freak petty tyrant and his wife who currently host the campground. Hahaha, almost every time I drive past them I get yelled at for going too "fast". It must be every retiree's dream to become a campground host and regulate like a third world dictator. Anyway, I've only been a rc.com member for the last month but you can count me in for the gathering... sounds like a good time for sure. Also, since I live in flag let me know if there's anything I can do to help. It should be fun meeting all of you. Phil

Don't forget Flapperfest the weekend of October 21st. Contests include Best Halloween Custome and "Who can climb the best in their costume?" Last year it was sponsered by New Belgian and there were more kegs than could be drank. Oak Flats Campground East of Superior, AZ. East on Highway 60 out of Feenicks.

BUMP! AZ 4.0 is sneaking up on us! Alert me to any changes to the guest list, be it adding or removing names, or changing question mark status. And... we gonna do Fay Canyon camping or the spot off the 89? Inquiring minds want to know.

Doo dee doo... OK peeples, unless somebody makes an urgent case otherwise, I am going to make an executive decision and declare that we camp at last year's Fay Canyon spot. BVB's got our backs anyway, right? (psst, Bob, if I get another root canal or extraction by then, maybe I'll have some percocet or vicodin or something to sweeten the deal 8-) ) Going, going...

As long as Bob is willing to go to court to battle any citations we get if Barney Fife shows up and gets a writing twitch.

In reply to: I'll dig up the directions from the AZ 3.0 thread. South on Lake Mary Road. Right turn at the first cattle guard. Follow it all the way back to the right, and camp in the big clearning where all the empty shell casings litter the ground.

Well it was a close one. i almost had to leave again and miss the trip, but scince I pissed someone off I don't have to work that weekend. Good deal I'm in. Oh and...Let's try to avoid the spot that the red neckes shot all the long neck Bud bottles at. Maybe get somewhere with trees to set up a slackline.

OK -- I'm going to stir the pot a little. I thought where we camped last year was a real shit hole. Add to that, the outside possibility that how ever legal camping there may be, we still might get hassled, and it makes it even less attractive. My suggestion for camping at a BLM area just a mile north of the Oakcreek Overlook is still the best choice IMO. I think some people are balking at it because they just don't know where it is located, but I promise you it's easy to find. I'll dig up the particulars when I get home, but it's on the east side of 89A about 1/2 mile north of the ADOT yard as you're heading north from the Overlook toward Flag. Plenty of wide open spaces, trees, and it is accessible to 2WD vehicles. Can we open this up for debate again? Yeah, yeah...I know. Always gotta be one knuckle head who rocks the boat. Ed

In reply to: OK -- I'm going to stir the pot a little. I thought where we camped last year was a real s--- hole. Agreed. Plus, the questionable legality of it... Having to post bond for 50+ climbers will really ruin JVB's weekend. ;)

as for camping at fay, just continue about 1/8 of a mile past the big party pit area where folks camped last year. a pristine meadow/grassland appears on your right. it is absolutely 100% guaranteed legal, there is no broken glass, there are some good problems right there (such as the bachar cracker of flagstaff) just pull your car off the road and camp.

8^) Just got back from climbing the highest peak in Colorado -- hit it just right (sunshine in the morning, snow at the summit, thunder on the way down -- whew!!!). Now Jim and I are ready for Arizona. We hope to leave from Northern Idaho/Montana Wed. the 5th of Oct. and be there on the 6th. We'll probably climb Mt. Humphrey's first to pound that one out and then meet up with you all. Let me know if there is any room left in the campsites nearby -- otherwise we can grab a hotel. Can't wait to see you. Cheers, and see you on the rocks! Jules

If we decide Fay Caynon heres the directions from last year. I trust Bob if he knows its cool, its a good spot less people around. Camping: Fay Canyon. Directions from Phoenix: Take I-17 North until just before Flagstaff. Exit Lake Mary Road (#339) and take a right approx. 3.2 miles to Forest Road 867, just before the first cattle guard. You'll notice the "Camping and Campfires Prohibited" sign. No worries. We are camping just beyond the restricted area. Proceed down this road until it makes a large dog-leg turn to the right. At this turn there is a huge parking and camping area. A normal two wheel drive passenger car can make it to this point with no problems--as long as you steer around the major ruts in the road--and as long as the road is not real muddy.
