So we all know when there is rockfall in chamonix; a murmur followed by a little vibration (unless it was the Dru 5 yrs ago!). Well today Chamonix experienced an earthquake!

It began this morning around 11:30 am and continued for a couple hours. The magnitude was recorded at 4.5. I had a hard time believing that chamonix lied on some fault line, however there is evidence on a church in Argentiere of an earthquake in 1905.

Although i am not in town now, i hope that the shaking did not cause too much rock fall in the mountains and that the climbers out there are safe and sound.

There was some minor rockfalls in many places. A girl climbing was mildly hurt and was rescued ; she left the hospital the same day. A cordée was so scared that the climbers couldn't move up anymore and were rescued too. SO nothing major apparently.
