i'm not volunteering, now. i'm just asking, with the slightly guilty guess that the man i'm criticizing made some sacrifices to do this, but:

how do you get to be the state 'manager," meaning the person who is in charge of the main page for your state? because mine wrote a solid paragraph in french. something about how he wasn't necessary to the Ohio Climbers Association and how we could ask him what was being done... I didn't understand it all. One quarter of french in graduate school is not enough to read my state page, apparently.

Dude,
Thats not French.

I spent some time going through the page. I don't think being the state manager would carry a lot of reward. Lucky thing many interstates pass through Ohio, so you can get OUT and climb.

Actually that paragraph is in Norwegian. I`ve not looked in on the Ohio section fo the RDB but that intro is one of the funniest ones in the whole of the rdb. Can`t complain about his sense of humour.

So to the question of how rdb managers are chosen. Well usually it is someone who sticks their hand up for the thankless task. At the moment however due to the change in ownership of the site everything is in a state of flux.

Yes, he's hilarious. For the second time: he CHANGED the LANGUAGE from French to whatever it is today! I speak enough French to identify it, honest. And I'm not going to keep editing my main post when he changes it.

P.S. Thanks for actually answering the question.

How does one 'stick their hand up?' To whom do they communicate, that is?

It is a rather informal thing really...if the state doesnt have a manager then someone either volunteers to do it or if it is noticed that there is someone who seems to know a lot about the area - a user that has contributed a lot to that area then they may be asked to handle it.

They report to the Senior Routes Database Managers.

If you have an issue, feel free to contact one of them or bobd1953. If you are unsuccessful that way contact an Administrator.

Hope this answers your question. ;)

also, if the state currently has a manager, its a good thing to sort of chat with them to see if they would be willing to give up their duties. thats how i got my job as the NV manager- the old one wasnt really into it anymore but no one else wanted it, so when i asked him, he was more than happy to pass on the duties. then i talked to the boss in charge of the rdb and i was good to go.

i'll work on the bloody coup. any recommended weaponry? i think i could lay hold of airsoft guns and swords.

seriously, i know very little about climbing outside of cincinnati, dayton and xenia. kentucky is so close -- i'm actually writing this FROM kentucky -- and so much more appealing...

Exactly!

The state of Ohio seems to have exactly 6 crags. One of them requires that you have $300k in liability insurance before you rope up. What is that all about?

The blurb has something to do with some sort of conflict that involves the Ohio Climbers Association. I don't read Norwegian so I can't say more. I checked out the Ohio Climbers Association web page. They seem like nice earnest people. I don't want to use the term as a pejorative, but I think they are top ropers.

The guy managing the Ohio database page is doing a great job, in less than stellar conditions.

i dk anything about having to have 300,000$ in liability to climb here. yikes. but for an iowa man, you know my state.

well, i wasn't asking him to give up his duties, but just so you know: i wrote our state manager before posting this. he's much politer than i am. and if it weren't for his tendency to use languages he doesn't speak and his rash criticisms of trespassing, i'd say he was cool.
