I'm going to be headed to Spearfish, SD in mid-January '06 to attend BHSU. I'll be looking for some partners to do some rock climbing when the weather starts turning nice in the Spring. I've never climbed in the Canyon, but hear it's nice. I'm up for anything, sport, trad, bouldering, whatever.
Let me know if you're interested.

Reg, give me a PM and I'll give ya my phone#. When ya get settled in, give me a call, I can always use another trad partner. I'll climb in just about any kind of weather. Spearfish canyon is choss limestone. I'm a little more partial to the Harney (granite) area, but open for anything, Devils Tower in the spring is great too!

I'm not exactly a limestone efficionado, but I think I know choss when I see it. I had a great time at Spearfish. The routes I climbed didn't seem chossy at all.

Spearfish Canyon has some great rock, though some of it you actually have to hike a few minutes to get to it. I'm not much for limestone pocket pulling though, I prefer the granite to the south or the Tower to west. The Black Hills have plenty to offer and I'm certainly you'll get in some good climbing, especially compared to what you had in East River, SD.

Reggie,

Hey, there is lots of great climbing in the Black Hills and the canyon is really fun to train in. I am from Spearfish and have spent the last 9 years climbing around here. Not only is there limestone in the canyon but there is also bouldering out by Beulah, WY and at Whiterock down by Newcastle, WY. The Black Hills is chock full of great routes and boulders. I would recommend stopping in at Rushmore Mountain Sports, it's on the corner of Main Street and Grant St. They sell gear and have a bulletin board to put messages up on to meet other climbers or find a partern. Also, check out the Black Hills Climber Coalition, it's a great way to meet the local community. Good luck and hope to see you out there!
