Al Hinkes on the summit of Annapurna

by Mick Ryan
January 3 2006

Alan Hinkes has been awarded the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the New Years Honour list for his services to sport. Hinkes, 51, became the first Briton to climb the world's 14 highest peaks in May last year after successfully summitting Kangchenjunga. He joins Sir Chris Bonington, Sir John Hunt and Doug Scott OBE as just some of the famous mountaineers to be recognised by the Crown for their achievements and service.

Hinkes is also an honorary citizen of his home town, Northallerton.
