Save climbing and nature in SoCal - help to ban DHMO!

I though that as a environmentally concerned community, we can make an impact in this important matter, regulation of DHMO uses in So. Cal. I am new to this country, and do not know how to proceed. I guess we should try collect signatures and to write a senator (how to find out whom to), or may be our governor, or the like? I know chemistry but completely clueless about legislation system. Any ideas would be appreciated. Here is what I know about DHMO.

Despite its known environmental effects (see below for a brief list) DHMO's use is not yet regulated in So. Cal., and profit-driven businesses and not environmentally conscious individuals are taking advantage of it. For example, it is routinely used as industrial solvent and coolant, as a spray-on fire suppressant and retardant (including recent fires in Angeles mountains!), by the Navy in the propulsion systems of some older vessels,
by elite athletes to improve performance, in the production of styrofoam -- the list is very long indeed -- below I provide a link that has more detailed information.

Some of the well established and documented effects of DHMO are:
- Death due to accidental inhalation of DHMO, even in small quantities.
- Prolonged exposure to solid DHMO causes severe tissue damage.
- Excessive ingestion produces a number of unpleasant though not typically life-threatening side-effects.
- DHMO is a major component of acid rain.
- Gaseous DHMO can cause severe burns.
- Contributes to soil erosion. [AND]
- Leads to corrosion and oxidation of many metals. [THINK BOLTS AND GEAR!]
- Found in biopsies of pre-cancerous tumors and lesions.
- Contamination of electrical systems often causes short-circuits.
- Exposure decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes.
- Often associated with killer cyclones in the U.S. Midwest and elsewhere.
- Thermal variations in DHMO are a suspected contributor to the El Nino weather effect.

Moreover, seasonal variations of atmospheric DHMO seriously affect climbing in So. Cal., and I suspect in other parts of the country as well. It may be DHMO levels, not climbing, that are affecting these yellow legged frogs at Williamson Rock, after all.

Detailed information can be found on http://www.dhmo.org. Let us act today, or it may be too late.

Someone just told me that DHMO speeds up degradation of epoxy -- this is really bad news for sport climbing in So. Cal. -- think Echo or Quarrey.

edited to keep the mistery.... and the fun...

Being aware of the harmful properties of the DHMO, I've learned to buffer it with C2H6O (4% to 40%) before (internally) exposing myself to it... :wink:

It is not funny! I am a chemist, and I can attest that all the effects listed in the original post are absolutely correct. I think any good citizen should stand up and demand that the government does something about it.

DHMO is also a major component of acid rain, a serious environmental issue in SoCal.

"So, much as with endurance athletes, moderate intake of DHMO prior to engaging in sexual activity may enhance performance..."

Seriously, how can they make such claims without giving the methods and actual data collected? Sheesh, looks like I'm going to have to research THIS topic for everyone too!!!

Yeah, sorry to point this out dumbass, but that is listed as the fourth issue in the ORIGINAL post, in almost the exact same wording.

Can you actually read? Or do you just guess and make yourself believe.

Hmmm, a couple of days ago I almost took you seriously. Oddly enough, I think Anna still does.

Hey, less flaming please. We're all concerned about DHMO. Unless you have something to contribute, Wes? :)

It's already a problem at Echo. Many of the glued holds are already coming off, and will have to be reglued with an epoxy that is less affected by DHMO. Unfortunately the quarry was glued with the same DHMO-sensitive epoxy, and will have to eventually be similarly fixed.

You think you have a problem with DHMO in California? Pfffft you ain't seen nothing. It is far worse problem here in Seattle. I'm all in favor for a ban.

Wes, you should know better then to post this kind of information on this website -- some immature and irresponsible users may be tempted to try this at home. I shudder to think about the consequences.

You can contact senators by going to

http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm

and finding your state...but I think you'd want to contact the governor/city government first, since the senators are busy with fighting off Bush.

You can contact Ahhh-nold by going to:

http://www.governor.ca.gov/state/govsite/gov_contacts.jsp

and either calling or emailing.

All you have to do is get enough people to write/call in. You might want to contact the forest service as well. I couldn't find their contact with a quick search, so maybe someone else knows who to go to.

Maybe someone should get a climber group involved in this? I am not a member of anything so I can't help with that.

Seems to me like this is a pretty big issue (maybe similar to DDT???)

Weschrist, your comments are not welcomed on this obviously very serious and relevant climbing thread. If you want to cause trouble and start fights, go to community. ;)

Way more widespread. I can't give you any exact numbers or references or anything like that, but I can say that it is at least 1.5 to 5,000 times more prominent in our environment than DDT.

It is not the numbers that are important here. DDT and other dangerous chemicals are regulated, whereas DH MO is not. For example, manufactures are not required to report DH MO content.

Thanks for the practical suggestions! I will draft a letter, then we should think about the logistics of how to collect signatures.

Not only that. Some states, such as California, are receiving large amounts of DHMO for industrial and agronomic use from neighbor states, and this is happening right in front of the government eyes. Moreover, everyone knows that this imported DHMO, at least in California, is being routinely spreaded over food products all over the farms to boost crop growth. The DHMO present in foodproducts has been proven to be the main source of the massive amounts of DHMO accumulated in human tissues.

I just polled my freshmen chemistry class re: DHMO. The results:

- 37 % support ban of DHMO;
- 13% oppose ban of DHMO;
- 43 % requested additional information;
- 7% do not care.

Seems like most climbers fall into the last category....

Yeah, but let's not get too carried away with interpretations here -- this is USC we're talking about, right? The football team used DHMO regularly throughout the season, and look what happened to them! Best ban it to be safe.

I was going to try to purge my body of DHMO this weekend by drinking only beer, but I understand most beer contains high levels of DHMO.

Fortunately, I start pissing like a fiend after about 3 or 4. Will this pass the DHMO as well, or am I still at risk?
