What would it be? I've got my dividend, for $65, and I want to hit REI to pick up my basically free cam. But I was wondering, what size should I buy? I'm going to get a BD cam, and I don't currently have any cams. I am planning on getting a couple sets from gearexpress shortly, however, so in the near future, I'll have 1 each of a .5, a .75, and a 3, and doubles in sizes 1 and 2. So with that in mind, what size cam should I buy? Steve

I'd buy the most expensive one free, which would be the #3. Either that or get one of the ones you're going to double up on.

One cam? It doesn't really matter. ONe cam on your rack is just... one cam. But, if you want to maximize your dividend, you should get a #3. Because you get 20% off one regular priced item. Since you're planning to buy another 5 cams or so on gearexpress anyway, you should maximize your 20% off deal by getting a #3. Or at least a #2. I think the #3 is 72 bucks, so your dividend should get you that #3 with no cash out of pocket.

I have doubles in bd .5-3 and i regret it. In hind sight a second set in another brand would be better. BDs are great cams, but there are advantages to others. Forges are light and cheap (I don't think REI has em). U stems are lighter than bds and metolius makes bomber cams. Different ranges in your second set is nice to. If I ever get the chance I'd swap my BDs for another brand... (note, I'm in New Zealand, so don't bother PMing me)

I bought a BD C4 #3 using my div and the 20% discount. (uh, now I have triples in that size - a #5 Cassin Cancam, and an E-bay bought Chouinard #3 ;-) ) anyway the C4 #3 was $68.95 off the rack. I paid $40.

haha i would say get an alien, but you cannot get them at rei anymore. You got doubles on 1 and 2 so go for the .75 (handcracks are fun ;)

I'd get a BD #4, cause it will give you more range, you might have to pay a little out of pocket, but having that extra range may make the difference between a good climb, and a scary runout climb. just my $.02

Agree with previous poster about not doubling up with same brand. I really like having a mix of WC and BD in sizes 1 - 3.5 (old sizes). All WC are slightly smaller than BD equivalents and its great to have both options. Id also say you might want to look at small cams as well - how about getting two old-style metolius TCUs (blue, yellow) on sale to fill out yer rack. You wont get the 20% REI discount , but lets face its not like a 20% discount at REI as empheral as a whore's love (sorry just always wanted to say that)

Even with the controversy and the recall I am still very much a fan of aliens so it will be the orange Alien if I was only allowed to buy one cam.

caughtinside is right on...One cam is just one cam. Buy a Jetboil. You'll get much more gratification from quick cofee in the morning than you'll ever get from just one cam. Mal

I place my #1 and 2 camalots the most, but stick with that penny pinching "strategery" and get the most expensive with the 20% off deal.

Well, I appreciate all the suggestions. I definitely would've gotten some aliens if REI still carried 'em, but they don't at least for right now, so I couldn't. As for the getting just 1 cam not being worth it idea, well, my rack's gotta start somewhere, right? I ended up getting another .75 after speaking with a friend of mine who suggested I go smaller since we're in close proximity to little cottonwood, and one of my favorite routes up there takes a couple of .75's. And I'm psyched about it! Woohoo! :D Steve

Economically the #3 may make sense but for use... I have place my #2 Camelots (old school gold) more than anyo ther cam I own. Get ready to clean and lube it for weeks before you use it. Thats what happens with the first cam....like first loves. P

Dude- hasn't anyone told you? Trad climbing is dangerous. Your money would be better spent on something less likely to kill you like-umm- expired lunch meat or a night with a disgruntled knife- wielding, Filipino hooker.

My sons think I'm a climber! My sons were on their way home from skiing with their Dad when my older son just had to call me to tell me about an ice formation that he saw off of I-70. He's 10. He was soooooo excited. I didn't have the heart to tell him that it's off limits to climbing tho.

my days in LCC were filled with size 1 camalots (old size) I think the .75 is a good choice if it is going to be a bit b4 getting the rest of yer cams. Do not get the #4 camalot, waste of money for the wasatch front.

Mal this is what i did with my dividend.....i havent even had a chance to use the damn thing yet, but i already know i'm going to love it! if i had to pick one cam- it'd be the cam that is my worst size for climbing- i always want more gear where its tougher! (if anyone cares, green camalot (#.75) is my worst size!)
