I am graduating from college and a friend and I would like to spend the months of June until September dirtbagging at either Rifle or Squamish. Does anyone have any advice on which would be better beyond just the fact that you like a certain place?

That would be a no-brainer for me. As fun as the climbs are in Rifle, I couldn't imagine spending the whole summer there. Squamish is one of the coolest climbing areas I've ever been to. I'm not sure what it costs to camp there since I haven't been there since they opened the 'official' climber campground, but the variety of climbing and non-climbing things to do at Squamish would far surpass Rifle. Personally I could spend a summer at Squamish and still want more, while I would be burned out at Rifle after a couple of weeks.

Well, those are two very different kinds of climbing areas you've selected... But since you've got 4 months, why don't you do both? WIth a bunch of other areas in between? City of Rocks, Sinks, Wild Iris...

If you decide to come to Squamish you will be able to climb beautiful granite cracks, scary slabs, boulders, sport routes and aid climb. There are quite a few nice areas outside of Squamish by only a short drive. Pemberton has some nice climbing and is only a hour away from Squamish, you can also drive five hours to Skaha which is great. Get in touch with me if you need any help. Jesse

You'd be baking out at Rifle... Spend June at Smith, July in the North Cascades, August and September in Squamish...

Squamish has got it all. Squamsih has everything that Rifle has, and then some. Just like Rifle, Squamish has steep pumpy sport routes a'plenty. Check out Cheakamus Canyon in the route database. It's home to the hardest sport routes in all of Canada. Beyond great sport climbing it also has world class bouldering, trad climbing, and aid climbing. You name it, Squamish has it

Squamish does not have "great sport climbing". Rifle has destination sport climbing, Squamish (with the exclusion of the Pet Wall) has mediocre, at best, sport climbing. That being said, go to Squamish - for the above reasons! Seriously.

In reply to: Squamish does not have "great sport climbing". Seriously. Blaspheme ! Cheakamus Canyon has some of the best sport climbing North of Smith Rocks. True Cheakamus isn't in Squamish, you do have to drive 20min to get there from Sqaumish.

Thanks for all of the advice. It sounds like Squamish would be a great choice for me and the climbing partner that will be joining me. We both love sport climbing, but it sounds like the bouldering and trad climbing make Squamish more of a long term enjoyable experience. Does anybody know anything about the length of stay an American can make in Canada. Do I need any kind of visa or something like that to stay for 3 and a half months. Martin

No restriction on how long you stay in Squamish. MAke sure to split camp sites and switch em up every 2 wks and take advantage of dumpster days and Friday pool day. or if you are sleeping in your vehicle.. then find the spit and save even more.

I live in North Vancouver. I climb in Squamish more than a lot, or most, of its 'locals'. I enjoy sport climbing. Now that you have the background, here are some facts: I climbed in Chek twice last year, and not once for the two years previous, before then my frequency of visits was also very low. To be blunt, Chek Canyon is the worst sport climbing I have ever done. Ever. Seriously.

I am also planning a trip to Squamish for the months of July and August. I will be flying into Vancouver and trying to catch a ride (I'm not sure how yet) to Squamish. I plan on doing some trad, sport, and a ton of bouldering. I'm always willing to give it the ol' college try. If you (or anyone else) is interested in joining up I would enjoy the company and a climbing partner. I'm also looking for a part-time job in area if possible to help pay off some of the expenses, if anoyone knows any hook-ups(?)
