Has anyone ever made a finger board out of wood? I've done a good bit of wood working in my past and My father in law has a nice wood shop. SO i was wondering if anyone had ever tried this.
Here's how I think I would do it.
First join two or three 4x4's together with a biscut joiner.
Then use a mortis attachment on a drill press to cut 1/2 way into the wood to make the various holds. Then use a router to round over all of the edges. Sculpting it this way to resemble a normal finger board. Sand the whole thing done to avoid any splinters.
Then finishing it with a polyurethane that has sand mixed into it to give it a rough finish.
Anyone ever tried this? Have any thoughts?

Just my opinion..
Use a 2x12 piece as a base.
Then use 2x4s cut in half length wise as your finger strips. Take your router to round and shape the strips much as you mentioned. Then pre drill screw holes and use a strong wood glue to apply the “holds” to your base. You can burn your router in on some to make dips in the hold and to vary them. The screws will clamp the holds well to the board and the glue will hold solid after 24 hours. I don’t think I would use any paints… possibly buy some of that traction tape and put strips of that on the holds. Good luck.

Good idea thrillseeker. That would probably be easier than drilling the mortises. You know if I'm going to go through that much trouble I should just make my own wall.

that is another option...
take your 2x12 base and just mount some holds. then when you work out just hang on them working around from hold to hold.

Wood gets slick before long.
Why don't you get a job so you can cough up $70 for a good plastic board. Then if you really want to work with wood you can mount it on a piece of 3/4" plywood.

I made one with a 3/4 plywood base and 1x2 pine stock rounded one side and covered them in grip tape (like on your skateboard) to simulate rock texture. Also found some small rocks that i drilled holes in and mounted (or you could just bolt on some plastic holds)...poor-mans hang board. Worked great until i found $70 bucks and bought the real-deal

I made my hangboard out of a piece of plywood (3/4") and then attached a few 2X4s cut to length to the front and drilled holes of equal size to make finger wholes, works pretty sweet, then a couple of polished off 2X4's on end for jugs on top. I might get a pic up at some point, I spray painted it black afterwards to make it a bit tougher for me.

what i did was get a 12mm ply wood
400mm by 120mm
i just bolted it to the roof of my garage
then i got plastic holds from my local gym
there around 5-10 bucks each
i brought one every week or so
buy the end of it all i have around 40 odd holds and the board id the best thing ive done for training
better than any wooden hold and lees work in the long run
and you get a great feel on the hands
well i hope that hels you all
total cost $35 + $10 for each hold

keep it simple. get an offcut of 3/4" or 1/2" ply. get a few off-cuts of wood to use as rungs, say three, one 1" wide, one 3/4" and one 1/2". Sand the edge off them till they are well rounded like campusboard rungs. screw them to your ply. If the wood gets slick or chalky/dirty then just sand off the outer layer giving you a good-as-new feeling. Don't both with grip-tape its a waste of time - think about it you are wanting to train finger strength, not your skin. Cost: zip. plus you can customise it later by adding pinches etc.
