As the title would suggest I was wondering why people aid climb instead of free climbing a route.

I first tried aid climbing when I was injured and couldn't free climb. :P But as it turns out, it's pretty fun. 8^)

well, on the off chance it isn't a troll - you can aid up stuff you could never free climb you can aid things in really bad weather you can sit back and lounge while aiding (crank-handled blender in the haulbag comes to mind...) you get to play with TONS of gear its a different ball game completely compared to other climbing - I've heard it likened to protracted bomb defusing in so far as it is a serious mental game sometimes to pull it off...think sketchy peckers in sandstone/mud... ...and I love it...

In reply to: so basically its for people who cant or can't be bothered to free climb can you climb 5.14? 5.15? harder? Because if not, that's a really arrogant thing to say.

Fuck 5.14... how about 5.8 while 1000' off the deck with 40 lbs of gear hanging off your harnesses? Now THAT'S climbing! ...but as i've always been told, the only stupid question is the one which is not asked. I guess the exception here has proved the rule.

Aid climbing was actually suggested to me as a way to practice my gear placements. I was told to find a nice hard crack and then just sew it up with gear and get comfortable with my gear.

i could list tons of reasons, many of them already have been listed. but i think for me its just incredable that with a bit of hard work, a bit of skill and a bit of balls you can ascend some -insane- pitches. its rather powerfull to know that no matter what the angle, exposure or rock qualty, all i need is a hook, an offset or a tiny cam to stick and i keep piece together an ascent.

Because aid climbing is fun. Most people who do it, do so because they enjoy it greatly (obviously). I like it for the technical side. Anyway, how the hell else are you supposed to climb a slightly overhanging, hairline seam running up a blank face?

Now THAT'S climbing! ...but as i've always been told, the only stupid question is the one which is not asked. I guess the exception here has proved the rule. When you're free climbing, you don't need 40 lbs worth of gear. A standard rack and water is all you need. That's why i made the comment about hard aid, it's much more neccessary. Most climbers can't free 5.14. Most climbers can free 5.8. The OP's post about people who "can't be bothered to free climb" actually makes sense when applied to 5.8 aid climbs. It doesn't make any sense at all regarding hard aid.

When your free climbing and think your getting to the top too quickly, when you haven't had enough clusterf*cks at the belays yet, when the idea of hanging in your harness for hours sounds appealing to you, and when you have all this friggin gear that you'd never use any other time.... THEN... you decided to go aid something. I forget who said it, but someone said "aid climbing is the slowest form of vertical locomotion"...they couldn't be more right. I've aided a few times, helped teach myself gear placements while on TR, and thought it'd be a good skill to have....but god damn is it an acquired taste! Cheers, Jim
