Stupid question about the movie Cliffhanger (bear with me)

Ok, so I know that there was a TON wrong with this movie and such, but I just have one question. At one point it shows Stallone shooting a bolt and bolt hanger into a face with some sort of gun thing. Do these exist? I mean, i can see where it would be handy and such, but are they really out there? Other than that, the movie is well, just laughable.

Cheers,
Jonas

I have one at home, it's very cool, but rather expensive and unhandy.
For a start, I paid 800$ for it, (not a ripoff)
second, the bolts don't have the same strenght as drilled bolts.
So you need more bolts = more money + "overbolting"

I use it for setting up routes while onsighting, Routes aren't as cool if not onsighted!

I'd rather have the little hand-operated self-drilling bolts from Star Trek. Just press them against the rock and POOF! Instant bolt! Why lug around a big heavy bolt gun? Well, self-defense, I suppose, in case any supervillains show up.

They're used all the time in construction. Just without the hanger.

Mesomorf - I sure hope you're kidding. Some kid might buy a ramset and try to shoot it into some granite without OSHA eyewear.

I used to work with a dude who claimed to have grown up in Idaho or Montana or some shit. Anyway, he said he'd used an industrial bolt gun to place anchors on granite, and hung ledges on them.
He was definitely full of shit on many subjects, but his knowledge of technical climbing details led me to believe he was actually telling the truth in this case.
Still, you don't wanna trust a 1/4" gunpower fired bolt.

The thing is, they don't shoot bolts, they shoot nails. So you'd have to make some hangers without holes on the rock side. Then you'd have to shoot through the steel and into the rock.

And then there's the fact that unless you're able to really put your weight over it, it just recoils and doesn't work. It's a rather violent endeavor. Not something I'd try in a precarious vertical position.

The fact that your buddy is still alive basically proves he's full of it.

Yeah, but the intriguing thing is that this guy was not at all a climber; he was just hanging out with some (maybe?) climbers and getting the opportunity to sleep on a ledge. I gave him a line of questioning to see if he'd mistaken a hammerdrill for a bolt gun and he was adamant about the hardware. That and his descriptions of other hardware and techniques make me somewhat inclined to beleive that the incident he described actually took place.
Those guns will shoot a stud into concrete; is it a big step to shoot one into granite?
I honestly think these goobers were using a bolt gun, albeit unwisely, on rock.

(Disclaimer: Don't try what I described in the previous post, it's stupid).

They really make one that shoots threaded studs? I find that hard to believe, but hey, I'm sure I haven't seen it all. Just think about how hard it is to drill a clean hole, let alone blast one! And without mangling the threads?

I would think that if a tool like that existed that could be applied to climbing needs, we'd all know about it and Smith Rock would sound like a war zone. He He.

No, I said nothing about threads. My suspicion was that the stud heads did not end up flush with the rock and perhaps they were slinging'em.
Then again this guy was a drug addled dishwasher, so take my story with a big ol' grain of salt.

Just take one of those air compressers and drill and leave it hanging up someplace for others to use. Just like Maestri did on Cerro Torre.

Even if there was such a tool that shoots bolts into granite (without the rock surrounding the hole getting blasted away...), the rebound would probably catapult you miles out of the wall.

Ummm... yeah.

Concrete to a typical hard granite is similiar to comparing a 2x4 of balsa wood to a 2x4 of aluminum.

Whomever made that page is pretty talented.

The tool pictured is the DX 76 MX. It is the "approved method of fastening profile metal sheets to steel substructures".

Ya know there Noshoenoshirt, I am tempted to believe you. Once just to prove that it could be done I rapped a full rope on a frozen power bar set as a deadman. I succeded and didn't even weight my backup. I would suppose that a ramset would hang a ledge just don't jump around too much and don't try fallin on that pro. Heck you could hang a ledge off a couple hooks, it just doesn't seem to promote a long life.
