I've only been climbing for about a year but am steadily beginning to emerge from the recesses of noob hood, so I apologize in advance if this is a silly question. Does anyone know anything about a sport called puenting? I found pictures on climbing.com - at first I thougt it was just bungee jumping but on closer inspection it looked like you find some high object like a bridge, tie in with climbing rope as opposed to bungee cord, and take a swing. Looks like fun.

Hey you guys ARE noobs. 'Puenting' was pretty big among the climbers in Cordoba when I went there to live for two years starting in 1994. They even used the Spanglish word 'puenting' to describe their activity, which is what attracted me to this thread. I haven't heard that word for quite awhile.

Ok you've got me all confused - was it just that this was a patently stupid question or is there something contraversial about puenting?

Sounds like the same thing that Dan Osman was doing? Or am I misunderstanding?

In reply to: Ok you've got me all confused - was it just that this was a patently stupid question or is there something contraversial about puenting? well, sprog, we don't speak of puenting because some of us have a secret society of puenters I have to say it tiny to avoid suspicion. Its kind of like base jumping. Everyone knows it's illegal, That's why we don't talk about it. So at night we get on our ninja suits and superman capes and when no one is looking... BAM! We puent like there was no tomorrow. I hope that was helpful and that my fellow puenters don't cut my rope for telling about our secret. We're going out this weekend, so if I'm not around monday, you'll know what happened. For you personal knowledge, the word puenting stands for Pooflinging Unicorns Endlessly Not Trapping International Nazi Gunslingers.

Dan Osman died doing a complicated rope jump. It was totally different than tieing off on a bridge and hucking it.

And for the record it is not illegal, trespassing is though. Same as BASE jumping. Some guys setup a tyrolean in MOAB and hucked it fairly recently.

In reply to: thanks cutty. if it's what dan osman died doing then i understand why you all are hesitant to explain. and why you were suspicious... The way the kids did it in Cordoba was to fix a rope near the middle of bridge and swing out from the side of the bridge. A BIG swing, get it? They didn't jump off and fall straight down. 'Puenting' comes from the Spanish word 'puente' for bridge and Dan Osman did not die swinging from a rope on a bridge.

A few years before Osman's death, however, one of his proteges attempted a rope jump off of White Canyon Bridge in Southern Utah. He swung into the canyon wall and died.

yeah, thanks all. i now know enough to avoid it... and am reminded of all the lucky similarities that romance languages have: pont, puente. i wonder if les francais call it ponting. (yes, that's a joke. i understand the i-n-g is an anglicization.) (why do people waste climbing time outside by... not climbing? i mean i can understand you sometimes have to mow the lawn, but... swing from a BRIDGE? for what?)

In reply to: Ok you've got me all confused - was it just that this was a patently stupid question or is there something contraversial about puenting? Nah, your question was fine...just typical reactions from jerks who try to dictate all posts here. And DanO was also into taking HUGE swings just for the fun of it, not off a bridge but a rope hanging from El Cap. I watched him but decided against taking a ride. A kid died doing a swing off a crane in Boulder not too long ago...miscalculations can be fatal.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this all sounds a little bit safer than falling while climbing. I mean - when you swing, you weight the rope more gradually than if you just fell on it, and your anchored to a BRIDGE, which by most definitions is pretty bomber. In fact I think I remember doing something like this in high school - visited a ropes course that featured a climbing rope hanging from a cable between two mammoth trees that you swung on from a platform some 50 feet up. If you do it right, this doesn't sound suicidally dangerous...
