I just read in a thread on the beginner section where a climber (who had been climbing roughly four years) had just sent there first 5.10 plus route. and they were quite proud of this.. I think that is awesome... and is a fine example of why I personally climb, and that is self satisfaction... and a feeling of personal accomplishment. Instead of encouragement this person was met with sarcasm...(despite a few good people). This makes me want to puke! This sport is so out of control!! This is just a small example of the ridiculous ego stroking of rock jocks at crags everywhere!!! I have news for these people who feel as though the higher the climbing grade sent.. the more respect you deserve!!! This is ridiculous. This is the same superiority complex shared by the football jocks that used to push alot of you a**holes around that have been climbing for five years and are now solid "5.12 climbers" (likely 5.11 for most, but have sent a couple easy 12a's). The point I'm trying to make is that the elitism that exists here is insane, the feeling of community and encouragement is non-existant and the grade that you climb at will definitely not directly reflect on how much sex you will have in the future.....!!!!! YOU ARE NOT ANY COOLER BECAUSE YOU CAN CLIMB HARDER. So .... Climb for yourself. Be proud of your accomplishments and encourage others to do the same. Nobody cares that you sent 5.10 at the gym in your first month, so keep it to yourself when you see somebody struggling on a 5.8 in there second year of climbing. Just because you met chris sharma and got beta from him most certainly doesn't mean that you are somehow more important than the rest of us. The higher the grade does not mean the higher the fun level. Just because you have been climbing for longer than somebody else, doesn't give you the right to criticize. Give advice and encouragement instead. The most ironic thing about this sport is that this attitude seems to be most prevelant with climbers who are in the 5.10+ to 5.13- levels.... Rarely is it seen with the trully elite!!!! The reality is that I have met some of my favourite people through climbing. I love climbing.. and watching others succeed at it. But when I get attitude, or see others getting it I want to explode, and I think I just might do so the next time I witness it in person. thankyou mitch PS I don't give a sh** about my grammar.. I wrote this quickly with passion!

I thought that I would add that I'm aware that the whole thread I mentioned may have been a joke, but it's still a stab at lower grade level climbing, and that may infact be worse. And that this was just an example of my observations...

BS, if you can't climb 5.12, you are a PUSSY and have no business crowding the crags up. Carry on.

Just a little add on... climbing used to be a sport of student/mentor. Seems nowadays the would be teachers think they are above taking someone under their wing, or the would be learners are to damn egotistical to accept help from anyone. Just my observation.

Fucking A man, good post. It's ridiculous that people who climb at higher levels think they can't have fun on lower grade climbs, and not only that, but give people who climb, for example, 5.7 shit because they're not as good. I personally climb 5.11, but some of my favorite routes are in the 5.7-5.8 range, and I do them all the time. Not only that, but a within my circle of people I climb with there's everyone from 5.13ers to 5.7ers, and everybody gets the respect they rightly deserve when they succeed on a climb. Kudos to the OP for stating what should be the obvious.

Some that criticize and maintain an elitist attitude are coming from a very insecure, troubled place. I personally feel bad for them. Don't let them bring you down, dont let yourself go down that path, and keep up your posts pointing them in a better direction. If it helps one person you did something of value today. And go send a .13 so we can tell you that you suck.

In reply to: Instead of encouragement this person was met with sarcasm...(despite a few good people). This makes me want to puke! Welcome to the Interwebs. Home of the anonymous Internet Superhero. Also home to many people who take themselves (and life) far, far too seriously. It's hard to respect the accomplishments of others if you don't really respect yourself or your own, which is probably where a lot of the negativity comes from.
In reply to: This sport is so out of control!! This is just a small example of the ridiculous ego stroking of rock jocks at crags everywhere!!! Be careful there, you don't want to have to buy a whole new keyboard just because your shift key is broken... Perhaps you should visit some other crags if those at your current haunts act in a way you despise. Acting like a shit seems to be more popular at crags and areas with easy access. (On the other hand I have met some incredibly positive boulderers close to the road... and I don't even really like bouldering) Perhaps it is an issue of commitment, or insecurity, or fashion. I don't know. It just seems to be the way of the world. The ratio of assholes to easygoing people seems to be a direct function of proximity to a parking lot. Try doing an alpine route now and then, or a ski traverse. Or just something serious in the backcountry. Once you're committed enough, it's not going to matter what other people think. Besides, people with something to prove are seldom found in places where there is no audience for their antics. When the reaper comes for you, there's only one person to whom you'll need answer. If you're satisfied with the way you live your life, you won't have to solicit the approval of others. If not, their approval won't help.

Mickey Dora is my hero, Endless Summer always makes me miss the ocean. To the OP, yeah, it sucks, but its something you have to deal with in any sport. in climbing, it can be worse with a definitive grading system to gauge "performance" across the country/world. No one should take grades more seriously than a gauge of personal progress. When I climb, I usually don't even bother with grades, I'm out to have fun, and i'm not going to sell myself short by not trying a 12.b or whatever. Just climb for fun, don't pay attention to anyone who looks down at you. They're just pissed because your having more fun than them. have fun, that is the whole point afterall.

In reply to: >The best climber in the world is the one who is having the most fun. >--Alex Lowe Actually Mickey Dora said that about surfers 50 years ago... The person who posts this cliche is having fun. The first person who comments on that post is having fun at the original poster's expense. The person who pieces together a sensless post such as this is having the most fun, because he is making a killing off of puting this quote on t-shirts and selling it to the disonance-seeking honorable-mentionites of the world.
