I would consider myself a trad climber, but I've done it all. Here's what it's cost me.

-~$5000 on gear, but that's a complete guess.
-Whatever it cost me to get a 2nd BS (in nursing) so I could have a job that allows me to live wherever I want and have 4 days a week off to climb.
-A couple girlfriends
-Money spent on porn due to lack of girlfriends
-4 operations to remove ingrown toenails
-Gas, plane tickets, car maintenance, etc for all the roadtripping
-Camping and park entrance fees I feel I shouldn't have to pay to use land that I, as a taxpayer, own
-Relationships with normal people
-Hundreds of dollars on beer

And what I've gotten:
-Happiness
-A better perspective from which to view the world

As previously stated, I'd be embarrassed to know!

Looking through the replies I started running a check list in my head. Oh man, I think I've spent as much as most and more than I would like to think about.

Amazing when you give it some thought.

All the cash that's been dumped into little shaped pieces of metal, attached to 10 cents worth of nylon, which if successful will keep you 300 feet above ground not falling towards it.

Then there are the other purchases, shoe's that don't fit but you gave a car payment for them.

Ton's of rope but not the kind you WANT to get tied up in.

Several different styles of nylon chastity belts, which, at times can feel like a 6th grade wedgie.

There are ice axes, pitons, bolts, biners, lockers, cams, stoppers, chocks, nuts, friends, atc, eights, swamies, D's, ovals, wire gates, twist locks, screw gates, bent gates, straight gates, hexes, tubes, tri cams, blah, blah, blah.

Then you have at least 3 packs of similar size because you didn't know what you were doing when you bought the first two. Rope bags, chalk bags, shoe bags, gear bags....when will it end. I even have a brand new Osprey with the tags still on it, I think it's at least 4 years old, no way in hell I'm telling you how much that cost.

How about clothes? Yea lets not go down that road. All in all it's a bill we don't want to remember but one we'll often brag about.

8^)

Girls should not be part of the our climbing investment and do not ever get them involved. When they dump us over school, over Mommy and their once in a lifetime trip to Europe we say nothing but they get upset over our climbing and they commonly hit us with

YOU LOVE THAT DAM ROCK MORE THAN YOU LOVE ME
MAY BE YOU ARE MEETTING SOME ELSE HAVING FUN WITHOUT ME
I AM TIRED OF YOU GOING OUT EVERY WEEKEND
HOW COME I AM NOT IN YOUR LIFE
WHY YOU SPEND SO MUCH MONEY ON THESE METALS AND ROPES
YOU ARE CRAZY
I AM WORRIED ABOUT YOU COME HOME NOW ( in the middle of Denali )
CALL ME EVERY HOUR ( yaa right , I will email you from 1/2 Dome)
YOU TAKE THAT DAM ROCK OVER OUR RELATIONSHIP
OUR MARRIGE IS FALLING OVER THIS ROCK
YOU PROMISED ME NOT TO DO THIS AGAIN

What did I miss?

Seems to be the trend but i'd simply say far too much.
Although one can't put a price on what I got out of it either.
the hedonic calculus that one navigates in the domepiece is a purly fuct process.

An honest assessment...

Gear: Roughly US$7500

Trips: About US$24,000 (+/- 500 or so)

Skill building tools (Courses, guides): US$2300

Literature: $800 - 900

Categorically speaking.... Not enough!

Most everything but ice climbing for me, although wall climbing and alpine falls far behind the holy trinity of bouldering, sport, and trad.
The few K in gear and more in gas and travel can't even come close to the financial cost of not working for the last 7 years.
Of course there has been a lot of good climbing in great places to compensate.

In Athens dollars, that's about two good burritos.

I've had moments when two burritos would beat an immortal soul, hands down.

'specially if they're heavy on the cilantro...

i could never even begin to tell you. i mean, could probobly figure it out, but i really don't want to. one thing i do no, right now i'm paying with something more real than currancy. the raw rubbed pads on my fingers are getting burned by my mildy warm coffee cup and every time i bend them to pick it up the wounds on my nuckles tear back open. good stuff.

one i thing i do know. compaired to other intrests i have in life, climbing is really quite dirt cheap. if i look at what i spent on my trad gear compaired to what i spend on my saltwater aquarium or what i spent on the engine for my race car, no compairson. climbing is one of the least expensive intrests i've had, and thats comming from a guy who plans on doing a big wall in a couple of months!

but whatever the price, its sooooo fuking worth it man!
