Is sun block safe on ropes? I use it all the time and I imagine it has ended up on my ropes, if even in very minute amounts. :?:

both are good for summertime outings at the crags. just don't confuse one for the other. very tricky thing that. one protects you from falls is the clue. one protects you from falls....

So much for keeping this forum free from tangents, jokes, and off-topic posts.

Welllll... it's not our intention to eliminate everything that may not belong. I think that would be a losing battle that might only result in my own insanity. I'll be happy if these threads stay mostly on topic. I'm more concerned with flame wars and overall thread value.

Word to the paranoid:

Sunblock lotions are PROBABLY fine for ropes. No one's ever reported an SPF-15 related rope failure. But this is the kind of thing where no one can ever be 100% sure. The reason is that there are a bazillion different sunblock lotions out there, with long lists of different active ingredients, longer lists of innactive ingredients, and new ingredients getting thrown in every year.

The companies test these things, but mostly to make sure they don't give hives to their lab bunnies. No one is testing them on UIAA ropes. This is why you'll probably never get a rope company to issue a blanket statement like "sunblock won't hurt our ropes." They, like us, have no way of really knowing.

The good news is that most of the chemicals that hurt ropes are fairly strong acids, and as such are unlikely to turn up at the cosmetics counter.

So personally, I'm not worried about having sunscreen on my hands when I belay. But I'll probably choose to store my full bottle of the stuff somewhere besides my rope bag.
