I was climbing at Shelf Road on Friday and the BLM was putting the finishing welds on the long-rumored access gate to Cactus Cliff. Beginning this week sometime, the gate will be locked and climbers will have to park at the Bank parking lot and make a 15-20 minute walk. The trail from the parking lot is fairly obvious. I don't really blame the BLM for this move - managing climbers and parking isn't really their specialty!

There were actually 2 BLM managers standing there while they were welding, so I chatted with them a bit. In the end it just became an issue that BLM doesn't have enough money to keep the road graded and maintained and the difficulties with the road (ice, lack of overflow parking, etc) became too much with the additional climbers using the area.

Hmmm, yeah, even the last tiem we were thre My friends and I were commenting on how rough the roas is getting. The is location, I'm sure its expensive to regrade it. I wonder if something can be done to help raise funds for the regrade (and keep the road open)

The walk isn't bad at all, spend the money on something more important...

The new hike in will be a pain, but I can never really complain about roads being closed. I wish the Forest Service spent more time closing roads instead of opening them up so people can access their oil drills and strip mines. At least they did spend money on something important ... a new outhouse! Much roomier than the old porta-john. Of course, they still didn't spring for any TP. But when in Colorado, the old rule applies - BYOTP.
