After 3 weeks in a tent...

Posted this on another site I frequent, figured I'd see what kind of response I'd get from climbers :-).

After 3 weeks staying in a tent, I'm now staying at the amazing, beautiful, *cough* expensive *cough* Bellagio in Las Vegas. Drove past two brothels on the way here too (considered stopping, my crotch said yes but my brain said "Hey we're already going to be spending too much on a crazy nice hotel room!")

So anyway, I can't put into words how amazing this room is, and how great a sight we must have been at the Check-In counter. My friend wearing his "white" climbing shirt with his scruffy beard, me looking the same way, except wearing a darker shirt so the dirt doesn't show as much. Both of us looking as if we had just crossed Death Valley to get into Las Vegas. The Check-In girl was great though, there was a guy right in front of me on the phone with the bank or something for a while, she felt bad for me and actually called another girl to come over and help me just so I wouldn't have to wait on a different line even longer (although the new girl came about a minute after the guy finally left, I don't know where she came from but it took a while to get there.)

So anyway, I just took a shower in one of the most beautiful hotel bathroom's I've ever seen. With granite (even more polished than the stuff at Yosemite!) and marble everything, it's just so gorgeous. I'm considering going down and getting something to eat at one of the restaurants (I'm really, REALLY hungry) but I don't feel like going back down, but the fillet mignon from room service is $41! Plus then I've got to tip the guy, PLUS it won't fill me up at all :-(.

Took a bit of a break to wash my clothes. I was getting comfy wearing the robe (with the towel as underwear to save my friend from any accidental "nut shots") but I figured the sooner I clean my clothes, the better. Now they're all smelling nice and clean (like me :-D.) I sure do pity those people who rode up to the 27th floor with my friend and I on the elevator (8 people or so in the Elevator with us, I was hoping to catch one with just the two of us to save anyone from our stench.) It's funny how we smell fine to each other, and people wearing perfume and cologne smell horrible to us, and it's the other way around for them.

Having worked the front desk at a major luxury hotel, I can tell you that the smell of somebody coming through is the least of their worries. So long as you're agreeable and your credit card goes through, they couldn't care less.

Housekeeping, on the other hand, will probably be cursing your name for years to come. Scrubbing the crap you probably left on that shower floor is gonna be hard work.

I spent my summer doing wilderness trail work on the PCT, with 6 others. We lived in the back country and in camp grounds for three months. We typically went 10 - 15 days without showering, which wouldn't be too bad, except we were very dirty and smelly from working on the trail.

We got many weird looks from people at grocery stores, laundry mats, and diners. I think most people thought we were homeless.

The best was when we decided to go to dairy queen right after a 10 day project in the back country. The lady at the counter asked me if I was a construction worker. I asked why, and she said because I was so dirty. I went in the bathroom to see just how dirty I was. I had mud covering the side of my face and a leaf in my hair. I guess that's what happens when you don't have a mirror for 10 days.

A few years ago I spent 3 weeks living in a tent in the bugs. After that long drive back to human life even ordering a cup of coffee was weird. It was like Wow, that was easy. I think roughing it is good for you soul.

I had a similar experience coming home from Sqaumish a couple of years ago. I hadn't showered in quite awhile, which was pretty rude considering we were traveling on an airplane. Long story short, our row got bumped to 1st class which was awesome, though I don;t think the people who paid for the seats appreciated flying with a couple of smelly MFs one of which (I won't say which) was getting somewhat obnoxious with the stewartess bell because of the free drinks. Good Times!

the rooms at the Bellagio are nice, but I really thing the Venetian has better rooms. I've stayed both places, and while the Bellagio has the nicer casino and better general facilities, I like the rooms at the Venetian better.

Went on a 7 days hike once. There were a few times we could bathe, but we've been using the same clothes during the hike to cut our load, only changing into cleaner clothes at night. Didn't really have the luxury of washing our hiking clothes in the evening either.

Coming out of the trail, we passed by a number of people going for shorter hikes. Passing these people, I realized that I could smell them from about 5m away. At first I thought everyone was wearing a lot of perfume, only later did I realize it was the smell of soap!!

I can smell clean people.... never thought I can ever claim that. :D

As one of my friends saying on the way back from camping once, you can tell when you're getting back to civilization when you start to feel dirty.
