As I am new to this and is perhaps my knowledge is a little lacking. I would love to hear some stories from you all about some things you have learned NOT TO DO. I can readily learn from my own mistakes, but the truly smart man learns from others mistakes.

Have any of you had any close calls, if so, what put you into that position and what should you have done to avoid it?

What are some of the coolest things you have seen or done as well?

Close Calls by John Long.

Accidents in North American Mountaineering by The American Alpine Club.

My own personal lessons learned:
1. Don't talk to anyone while you are tieing in (to climb or rap) or belaying. Give your complete focus to the task at hand.
2. Rushing will get you hurt.
3. Wear a helmet.
4. When leading don't let the rope get behind your leg.

1) Eat and drink enough in all weather. The boink comes on fast. I still haven't learned this one.

2) Being in good aerobic shape helps.

3) Remember to have fun. This on is contingent on #1, 2.

Best, Kim

RE getting the rope behind your leg: Don't lead!!! Not yet anyways. And once you do, don't fall! Ice is NOT rock. Theres a ton more ways to get kilt.

Don't be afraid to use rock climbing techniques. Stemming, smearing, hooking, drop knees, etc. You don't have to rely on tool, tool, foot, foot, pull, repeat. Unless the ice is completely featureless, use everything to your advantage!

Don't stand anywhere under a climbing individual if you can avoid it. Don't walk under them, and stay out of the general fall line. Things like to go tumbling down to the ground. Things that can get you kilt.

become familiar with snow stability/instability theory

spend the coin on quality gear the first time, trying to make due with sub-par equipment is an invitation to suffer

never think less of yourself for recognizing you are in over your head and need to back off. We all have 20/20 hindsight, and nothing's worse than checking into an ER, looking back saying "I KNEW I should have been doing something different"... but didn't.

1) When leading, avoid hooking the ice at first. Go ahead and bash away. Its easy to pull out on your tools when learning to hook. You want to pull down rather than out on your tools when hooking.

2) If you do fall leading - when they finally get you in the ambulance - don't let them cut off your gortex.
