What is the difference between faking and flaking your rope before you start to climb? I have heard both used to mean the same thing, and I am looking for some concrete evidence on this.

Someone is screwing with you. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I've never heard the term "faking" used like that.

Yep. The person(s) who said "faking" don't know what they are talking about. Or they are messing w. you.

They were probably "faking" that they knew what they were doing.

My punk ass climbing partner likes to say, "I'm ready to betray you now", and "betray is on". I told her to knock that shit off.

I climbed near a woman with small kids a few years back. She repeatedly told her kids, "You're on be-bay!" It was always in a loud, sing-song voice. My partners and I ask if we're "on be-bay" every now and then.

Thats hella funny.
At work Will ask the new guys to get a left handed hammer. It's always funny when they go ask the boss for one.

People dont like to admit they dont really know what somthing is called...or they misheard someone along the way.

Some friends of mine have come a long way from the mis-pronunciation of climbing terms such as:

Piton: I heard "pie-tin" and had no idea what he was talking about. Then he pointed at someones shoes in a gym one time...the piton's, and I got the picture...

Arete: Same deal, I heard "areet" and was lost. Then was shown the feature, understood and offered up the more common pronunciation.

It happens in any activity that inherently invovles its own lingo.

kudos to the line about "faking" the rope for bouldering...awesome!

Aww, the guy is from Louisiana, can you blame him for being a little confused? Wink

I keed.

One of my partners heard somebody say "belay" as "brulee" (as in, creme brulee). He told me this story and then said, "You are on brulee." Me: "Creme-ing!"

...............

Come on, that's funny shit!

Climbing on Suday with one of my buddy's I've climbed with for a couple years... We're at a rap anchor and he says some of that "TAG" looks like shite. I think I'm just hearing things wrong and we clean up the "tat" and put some new cord on the anchor... Next rap anchor he says it again "lets clean out that TAG and put something real to rap off of." OK this time I have to ask what's with the T A G? He says You know TAG and points at it.... Woah buddy... it's called tat. You know T A T.
All these years ang he thought is was T A G haha I'm waiting for the next one now.

In climbing, "flaking" means to stack your rope from one end to the other. It is also a sailing term, meaning to lay a rope out in parallel lines. In sailing, "faking" a rope means to coil it or figure-8 it neatly on the deck. This term is not used in climbing.

Creamin on lead eh CS? That must have been an orgasmic pitch!

Angus like to use "Tooth Decay" for on belay. I prefer the middle finger.
