i am doing a speech for a class about climbing (it will most likely be some what lame, but i want to begin with a short overview of the history of climbing.
I need to cite the reference, so a credible website (i dont think this forum counts ) or book would be very helpful.

i think i should rephrase after a little searching.
when did climbing start as a disipline and what sort of climbing was that. and maybe what country it originated in.

W. R. Irwin in the '50s edited a volume from Columbia UP, Challenge: an Anthology of the Literature of Mountaineering.
If you can access a good library with a copy, it will provide interesting answers: Petrarch, perhaps the first person to climb a mountain for the personal satisfaction (or perhaps not, if he never went up on Mt. Ventoux, and was only writing off some metaphors in Augustine); or any number of 19th century folk, including Whymper, Young, and Mummery, some of my own favorites.
Irwin's anthology would let you offer several claims and then provide reasons for you own particular choice.

I'm not sure the Iceman was climbing for recreation. He was more likely in flight for his life at the time of his death. Of course, that's not much different from the rest of us, is it?
