That's gotta be worth at least 30 pitches right there.

I'm starting this thread to keep track of that goal and also so other people can post up similar goals and keep track of it as well. Kind of like Angry's work out thread, but a little bit more forgiving.

Anyone got something to add?
What do you count as pitches? In the Gunks I would commonly run two and sometimes more pitches together.

If I set goals similar to this one I try and estimate and set goals by the number of feet I've climbed instead.

I'm only counting pitches as the free climbing between the ground and a belay anchor, or between one belay anchor and another. I'm not too keen on the distance measurement because I'm not very good at estimating or remembering distances. Its easier to just count the number of times I arrived at a belay anchor.

And I only count the pitches I've led free.

Damn! Good luck with your goal! That's a LOT of climbing, especially if you're just counting pitches you've led. I have about 30 since Feb and will be lucky to double it by the end of the year. I never climb as much as I used to.

Hmmm, about the only free pitches I've done this season is 7 pitches of sport climbing I put up as an onsight FFA rope solo bolting on lead, 3 of those pitches I lead in my Tevas, true story. I've been mostly concentrating on my climbing photography and outdoor ed facilitation where I spend my days chucking kids off cliffs in abseil sessions. All good fun and I am out in the outdoors on rock, what more could one want.

Hey why not also include actual length of the climbs and sum, that way you have have a vertical marathon too :)

18 Trad Leads
4 Trad Second Pitches
and
6 Sport Leads

5 days in the Valley starting today, that should put a dent in the numbers.

20 trad leads, 2 sport leads; 980 more trad leads this season would be great! 80 more would be fine too.

Especially if he does a couple of routes on La Esfinge.

Angry may just have to change his name after a month in Peru.

Thinking back, I just counted 33 different 1 pitch climbs since April 1. I'd be more than happy to reach 400 by November 1st. The only way I could possibly get anywhere near 1000 would be to find some way to factor boulder problems into the equation.

Because I'm terrible at estimating distances, and most of the stuff I'm getting on (as somebody else pointed out) is quite short. Pitches are just easier to keep track of. I can even update this when I'm drunk (as I did last night, it was a good day of climbing).

When your drunk , a 100 feet is a 1000 closer to your goal, but I completely understand your reasons and it is a very cool idea.

Here are just some obvious thoughts I had:

52weeks a year = 104 weekend day opportunities to climb

If you could only climb on the weekends and you climbed every weekend day possible you would have to average just under 10 pitches each of those days.

10 pitches...doable. More likely if you could climb 200days of the year (that's averaging about 4 days of climbing every week) you'd only have to average about 5 pitches a day= VERY DOABLE.

Here's my best guess as to where I'm at this year.

Roughly 20 or so toprope climbs at Great Falls. Mostly 9's and 11's, a few 12s. One great project that i've still haven't sent.

About 25 boulder problems done throughout a 3-day weekend in Boone. Moslty V3-V6. A few new V5s and almost sent a V8.

About 8 routes done over a week at the NRG during the worst weather ever. Onsighted a few 5.11d sport routes and onsigted a 11.d crack which was cool.

On the same trip, I bouldered about 25 problems the last 2 days in the frigid, yet perfect friction, cold.
Sent 2 V7s and a slew of other stuff between V1-V6. Almost sent a V8.

1 day at Franklin led 10 sport routes all onsight except a 11d roof route in which I took a hang trying to figure out where to make the blind dyno out of the roof. Onsighted 2 12s.

Another day at Franklin climbed 8 sport routes. Mostly 10s and easy 11s. Did one 11d and led a 5.9 in my sneaks.

Going to the NRG for 4 days next week, hopefully can add about 30 routes to this list.

Grand total for 2007, Im counting boulder problems, is 96. Whoo Hooo! If I get 500 I'm happy

And this is how you make the goal seem insurmountable.

I'm trying to climb every day of the weekends and two or three afternoons during the week. So we'll see how far I get.

Sorry dude. But what's up with this two pitch a day bullshit? if your goal is to climb 1000, maybe you should do more than warm up and go home?

This is a good question and one I don't really have an answer for. Typically, I just end up wasting a bunch of time. The other key is that I don't count a pitch that I didn't lead free. So if I seconded it, if I hung, if I toproped it, its invalid for the sake of this list. The goal is to get me climbing more, in better style. So for me, the only climbs that count are the ones that are clean. This also doesn't include bouldering or projecting anything. I've set a very narrow criteria for what is counted as climbing, for the purpose of this list, and so its going to drag down the number of ascents.

Maybe this will provide the impetus for somebody else to go out and climb more.

ok, fair enough. I'd just add that your pitch goal and your criteria seem at odds with each other. 1000 free clean leads? man, that is a lot to ask for unless you're doing a ton of easy stuff, and seems like if you were serious about that goal with that criteria, you'd stick to easy stuff. Also, what about multipitch? Are you really not going to count your partner's leads?

If I attempt something that is a hard grade (for me) I don't have to always get it clean to feel like I climbed well. And it definitely counts! Maybe more, since you're pushing. Following a stronger climber on stuff you can't lead definitely counts in my book too!

It's your game, so it's your rules. But if it were me, I'd soften them up to include more climbing.

I've spent a lot of the last two or three years getting up stuff by every technique except free climbing, and I'm trying to change that. I think its a crucial reason why I haven't climbed many harder routes. So I'm going for shear mileage in such a way that reinforces the good behaviors rather than the bad behaviors. It helps that my partners mostly don't lead and I haven't done any multipitch climbs since I started keeping track.
