Time off - I'm dying!

OK, so I hurt my finger (pulled/strained tendon) almost 3 weeks ago. I haven't pulled on anything for almost 3 weeks now. The way it feels right now, realistically, I'll probably have to wait another 3 weeks before I even start back slow. This is the longest break I've taken from climbing and it's very hard! I realize how much climbing keeps me mellow and plugged in. I defintely can tell a difference these days. The good thing is I've gotten back into yoga and started slacklining.
What is your experience with time off? Did you lose a lot of strength? What about the mental aspect? I was sending the hardest I ever did before I was injured - I wonder how much i'll lose? This is taking some getting used to.

Peece,

Zak

I don't believe you haven't pulled on ANYTHING in the past three weeks... especially if you haven't been able to climb.Tongue

people who train hard all the time need a few weeks off to let everything heal up to 100%. (from time to time) Your six weeks will not make you lose a significant amount of strength, in fact, as long as your finger doesn't hurt when you go back out, you might even feel stronger.

To keep yourself optimistic, read all about the "reminiscence effect."

Think of your time off as a chance for your mind and body to edit your engrams.

You'll come back weaker, but possibly more efficient...and the strength will return very quickly.

IMO 6 weeks is about the average time off any random finger injury takes.

It's hard to take but you've got to find something else to do during that time. Keep up with the crosstraining, it may have been something you were neglecting anyway.

More than strength, you will probably first notice the complete loss of endurance when you restart, but it comes back. Good luck!

I'm in that same situation - strained tendon, 3 weeks as of yesterday, going crazy.....Frown
I don't think you'll lose that much strength in just 6 weeks, and whatever you do lose should come back pretty quickly. You'll probably find yourself getting pumped faster than you used to though.
The good news is, you can work on other things that can improve you're climbing in other ways..... do situps or something, and maybe running and slacklining. And pullups. lots and lots of pullups ... . . . . .. . .. .
