This is the old site near Connellsville that has been closed for some time? So bouldering is allowed but there aren't bolt lines anymore?

I believe that the toproping area along the road is on private property and has been closed for a while. These boulders are a little further up the road into the State Game Lands.

My SO will be spending the next few weekends studying for her comps, so I'll be looking to get away, e.g. Seneca or the New. Let me know if you're interested.

The really old bolts were put in by Ray Burnsworth around 1984 (pre sketchpads, crashpads). Those couple lines along with several others were the only established climbs through the valley. Now those TR "routes" are now easy boulder problems. Yeah the trail continues around that block and down the hillside to a lot more bouldering. I'd say another 1/4 to 1/2 mile. We are just about done connecting the light and dark side at the far end of the ridge. Which will make about a 1.5mile circut/maze of bouldering. Lots of possibilities and you're right. GOOD High balls.

Definately a different area from the old TR area at the top of the bumpy hill. That area is called Lower Casparis and is privately owned. There used to be several old bolt lines there, but the hangerless bolts were pulled 2 years ago by the guy that put them in. Climbing is tolerated as long as we don't make a mess. Several really nice trad lines are right there off the road. Cheers... Tim

Thanks Tim, this will probably be the next place I check out. Unfortunately my climbing partners seemed to have taken this belief that school comes before climbing.

Who all is planning on going to the New Minivous (next weekend)? How about Rocktoberfest at RRG (Oct 12-14)? Chili Cook Off at Seneca (Oct 20)? I'm hoping I'll be at all three. Definitely Rocktoberfest and Chili Cook Off. Bill, I'm looking at you, are you going to all three?

I want to go to the Minivous and Rocktoberfest. However I might be getting pulled into work the weekend of the Minivous, so still unsure about that. I haven't quite made up my mind about Rocktoberfest yet. If I'm going to drive 7.5 hours to Kentucky, I want to sleep comfortably at Miguel's and get to climb lots of routes. I have a feeling that weekend I will drive 7.5 hours, have to find some random campsite in the woods, and wait in line on every route. Therefore I'm considering going to the New that weekend, as cool as it would be to meet Chris Sharma, Dave Graham and Lynn Hill. They're also showing King Lines friday night I believe.

I have a campsite reserved at the state park. I have 2 other people from Philly definitely going down. If my wife decides not to go, there would be room for one more (we're allowed 4 adults). Lines are going to suck that weekend, but I figured that might be a good chance to get on some more obscure lines. I've also noticed that on busy weekends, the 5.6-5.9 routes are really busy, so we're going to focus on .10s and 11s. We'll see how that works out. Everybody in this forum must live on the wrong side of Pittsburgh, cause it takes me 6 hours to get to the RRG from Zelienople (no pee or food breaks).

I haven't made it down yet myself, but I heard 6 hours as an estimate from my friends. Another explanation is the time it takes to actually get on a highway. Driving through traffic to get to 79 can be really crazy if you are leaving during rush hour on a Friday.

I guess I'm lucky there, in that I can be on 79 in less than 5 minutes anytime of the day. Never really thought about it, but this is a good location to live. 20 min from McConnell Mills, 5 minutes to 79, 10 minutes to PA Turnpike, 30 min to downtown, airport, and Monroeville, 3.5 hr to the New or Seneca. I should have moved here a long time ago!

I will be at the mini veaux but have to leave early on sunday. I will be in new hampshire and then colorado in october, so I will miss the others. I am five minutes from I80 and eight from I79. Thirty minutes from the mill. But I'm closer to the gunks than you, cept I seldom go there. Rrg is 435 miles for me so to make it in six hours I have to average 72.5 mph. I can do that if I drive but I shared the driving and stopped for gas and pee.

That would be cool (extra spot in campsite) but if I go I'll be with at least 2 others, so we'll probably just try to find our own site. There are definitely some obscure areas you can find, especially if you want to do some trad all weekend (which isn't a bad idea). And I suppose I could get there in a little over 6 hours as well... perhaps I should just drive the entire way instead of letting my partner drive.. he missed the only two turns on the way to NRG last time we went (sorry Beau) .

Such gorgeous weather! Cool, crisp: the rock is so grippy. Summer humidity is just a bad memory. Spent Friday at Coopers until the rain came. Met Sebastian from Germany and family. Gave them a belay or two. Fantastic climbers. Saturday joined the Wyse climber for a lovely day at Breakneck. When he onsighted Mosquito direct, I knew I wasn't worthy, but we climbed to ruination anyway. Seneca next weekend, life is so good.

Sounds great that you were able to climb with so many people. I felt a little tired yesterday, but things took off after I started climbing. It was a beautiful day when we were in the sun. The fall is wonderful. I feel in shape after a summer of semi regular climbing, and my lead head is totally falling into place now. I ended up trying to onsight my hardest attempted lead yet. I hung on some bolts, but it felt good! It was great to challenge myself. I think I will be ready for the redpoint next time we go back.

I toperoped an easy climb at the mill today and flailed on another. I was pleased though. I fell bouldering the other day, lost my footing and fell backwards landing with a big rock in the small of my back. There is still some pain but I can carry things, like my pack, walk a cpl. miles, and climb so it's ok. I was afraid I had really hurt something. Makes ya think.

Glad to hear you're OK I think we are going to go to RRG the weekend before Rocktoberfest because it happens to be my partner's Fall Break from school, and I have Monday off (Columbus Day) and will take Tuesday off as well for a nice Friday-Tuesday trip at the Red. I think it shouldn't be too crowded either.

Mountainman gave me a great introduction to climbing in sw PA on saturday. He's a good guy to get lots of info from, on most anything it seems. I have weekends free and would love to get out as much as possible while it's still sunny and tolerably warm, so drop me a message.
