I have a business trip that will have me in Austin in mid-October, and I will have the opportunity to make a long weekend out of it. Looks like Enchanted Rocks State Park is the place to go, and I was looking for a little information on it. I ordered a climber's guide, but was also looking for information on what weather to expect, what camping is like there and whether I will need reservations for the weekend, and if I will be running into hunting season or some other hazards. I am not a high end climber, and many times only the difficult stuff is bolted, so should I bring trad gear? Any input appreciated!

if you plan on camping in the park, you may need reservations in October. Another option is to camp at Oxford Ranch, which is between Fredericksburg and Llano, 12 miles from the park, there you should not have a problem getting a campsite.

The climbing is granite, slabs & cracks. Bringing gear will definitely expand your options even if you only use it to set topropes. Not a lot of routes are sport bolted though you'll find lots of runout bolted slabs on the backside. Hope this helps.

Hey, thanks, yeah I tried reserving a camp space today and they were already booked for that weekend. Thanks for the heads up on an alternative!

If you're trying for October 20 or thereabouts, it's gonna be a full weekend. That's the date of the Granite Gripper, erock's climbing comp and the biggest comp in Texas. Last year had around 150 registered competitors decend on the park. A great community of people having a great time.

The guidebook is a big help, so dig through it.

I'll be there October 11-14th. Hopefully that is the weekend before!
