Anyone out there want to comment on Boreal shoes. Is it normal to see a split between the sole rubber and upper rubber around the front of the shoe? I have a pair of Ace's that had continuous rubber (no seam) when new a few months ago. Now there is a visable split between the sole and upper around the front of the shoe.

That does not sound normal to me. I'd recommend calling Boreal or if you go them at REI (or some other place with a good return policy) take them in and see if they think it's normal. REI would probably be pretty cool about getting you a new pair or sending those ones back for you. Phyre

I am glad you metioned it cause I have noticed the same thing in my boreals. But it has not really caused me any problems yet and the rubber does not seem to be coming off.

that happened to my la sportiva focus. what i did to fix it was just pour a little super glue into the seam and then hold the rubber onto the sole, hold it for about a minute and then let dry overnight.

this happens on the toe point of most of my shoes from flag/toe scums on roofs, super glue as stated works great, a hot glue gun also. Epoxy is good if you are REALLY careful and neat.

my suggestion for you is this: take a lightbulb and a shade, and stick them in your aces, because boreals make better lampstands than climbing shoes.

My friend has some Boreal Diablos that don't fit him. I was going to buy them from him until I checked out outdoorreview.com And heard that they fall apart. I checked out his shoes and shure enough, they have that same problem with the rand splitting off. I don't think I will be buying them!

Yeah, my equinox's started doing that about a month ago (they're 5 months old). Shoe goo. good stuff. Just make sure you clean with alcohol before you glue, and use a toothpick to apply the goo. It sets up permanently in about 24hrs. However, I'd like to state for the record that I will be buying myself a set of 5.10 Huecos this week, because Fusion rubber sucks. I have a pair of approch shoes (Mountain Masters) with Stealth rubber and I can climb better in those than in my Boreals. [ This Message was edited by: vegastradguy on 2002-10-14 15:10 ]

Same thing happened to my Boreal Zens and then the little split turned into a large hole. I'm getting them resoled now with C4 rubber so it's all good. Great shoe but the rubber was a bit weak. Hopefully that problem will be solved with some good five.ten rubber.

My 5.10's didn't do this until I got them resoled, but I just got a pair of La Sportiva Megas in the beginning of September and they are separating already at the sole. I agree with the other people here though. It doesn't appear to be a problem

The sole separating from the rand is not limited to Boreal shoes. It happens to pretty much any climbing shoes when the climber drags their foot up the wall on a regular basis. Most climbers who do it don't even realize it, but the action of sliding your feet up the wall when you are moving it causes the rubber to peel back - particularly when they've been worn for a bit and the sole rubber is getting thin on the edges. My first pair of shoes (La Sportiva) had this problem, but my new Boreal Aces are almost ready to be resoled, and are still adhered fine. As a side note, 5.10 has the worst quality control of any of the shoe makers. I worked in a climbing gym for a while, and we regularly had returns of 5.10's due to various manufacturing defects. We even saw some pairs where the L & R shoes out of the same box, labelled the same size, were different lengths, and others where the toe rands were cut and shaped differently. Terrible quality control - and very frustrating from the standpoint of the retailer. [ This Message was edited by: tradguy on 2002-10-15 14:04 ]

Hey an update. I contacted Boreal and sent the shoes in... they sent a new pair back, in a week. With that kind of customer service, I think I will stay loyal to them. Oh, by the way, I think the opinion on dragging the toe of the shoe up against the rock is most likely the problem. I have fixed that problem now
