The season is here for climbing on the Sheepshead in southern Arizona. Dan and me enjoying six pitches of fine granite on Too Tough to Die.

The Sheepshead is the fine granite dome just right of center.

Photo of me on pitch one. The crux of the climb comes right at you at the start; thin slabby moves. Followed by a moderate crack and then finishing on a steep slab.

Dan after the crux on pitch two. Climb a brown water-stained slab before moving right up a desperate yellow lichened face to a merciful dike.

The fun continues on pitch three pulling this steep headwall. Doesn't look like much but don't judge a book by its cover.

Pitch four has this short but very cool rounded slab. To do it right, slap the left side of the slab and friction up. Midway up, palm the rounded features on the holdless face. Then throuw your right hand up to the right side of the rounded slab. Committing and you cannot fall.

Pitch five is way cool. After this steep start get ready for some heady climbing. Make sure you know how to tie off a chickenhead and you have one or two shoulder length slings. You can see the final pitch way up and left.

Dan completing the outrageous traverse on the final pitch. Not that hard but not for the meek.

Me, just below the summit, on the final slab after the traverse

If you are looking for 700-800 feet of superb granite slab climbing. Make sure to head south to the Sheepshead.

Depends on where in Arizona. We have crags at elevations ranging from about 1,100 to 9,000 feet.

And the Stronghold, even being in the desert, can get nasty cold.

Sweet! I like slabby, balancy moves. those where you have to kiss the rock to stay there.
