Early January I will be heading out west to do some climbing. I live in the midwest and am not familiar with all there is out west. What do you suggest? Utah, Nevada, California? I dont want anywhere to cold and up for any type of climbing. Thanks for your help

Utah can get cold California desert has some great climbs all year round never been to Nevada so can't help there

I spent last weekend in joshua tree. Great climbing there. Anything else near there?

off the top of my head
malibu creek canyon, malibu, ca
red rocks in nevada
phoenix, az area has some climbs (eg queen creek)
tucson, az has (eg mt. lemmon, cochise)
moab, ut for cracks
hueco tanks near el paso, tx for bouldering
el portrero chico in mexico

You don't specify what type of climbing you are interested in, but some of the suggestions are suspect. If you are driving from the midwest there is no reason to climb anywhere other than one of the MANY world class climbing spots out here in the great beyond. I would suggest: Sport--Smith Rocks, Oregon (on the dry side of the cascades, usually sunny in Jan.), Owens River Gorge (out side of Bishop, CA), Joshua Tree, CA
Bouldering--Hueco Tanks, TX (probably a shorter drive), Flagstaff, AZ, Bishop, CA, Joshua Tree, CA
Traditional--Joshua Tree,CA Paradise Forks, AZ (near Flagstaff), Cochise Stronghold, AZ.
As you can see, the best bets for all arounders are Joshua Tree, CA and Bishop, CA. For me, I love Joshua Tree, but the restrictions on dogs (yes, I am a responsible dog owner--I leash and scoop poop) make Bishop better for me.
Above all, be prepared to move if a weather system comes in. I would also avoid trying to hit too much. Much of the rock in Josh and Bishop takes some getting used to. Stay awhile, get to know the place...have fun

What about idlewild. I know its not far from JTree......And good trad climbing there?

excellent multi-pitch trad at Tahquitz and Suicide Rock in Idyllwild, about 2 hrs from JTree. but like the Needles, they're summer destinations. don't go in jan
Red Rocks climate is similar to JTree. there are mild stretches in the winter, but there're also days that are just too damn cold/windy/wet. better than rest of the country that's snowed under, but spring and fall are really the ideal times. still, doable in jan. just be emotionally prepared for a few bad weather days too
if allergic to the cold, go with El Potrero Chico, Tucson, or Hueco. you'll have plenty of fun at any of those, esp if you're open to climbing whatever
