Ron Kauk is a bad ass. Put up many hard lines in Yosemite and is probably one of the most famous climbers alive. Looks like Tom Cruise so he does all the climbing stunts for Tommy.

I thought the same thing when I saw him on a climbing video. I think it was _Masters of Stone V_. I wondered if he was a stunt double too. Thanks for the info.

Ron Kauk is his name. One of the strongest climbers of his time (70s-80s). He climbed Midnight Lightning first, and the Magic Line. He also climbed a big wall in the Karakoram, Uli Biaho, which set a new mark in boldness for big walling in remote areas at altitude.

Ron is still one of the strongest climbers in the Yosemite Valley. I saw him about a week and a half ago at a buddy's pad in El Portal.

Seperate Reality, Tales of Power, Lycra Virgin are all still Yosemite testpieces.

I think Ron is more proud of his environmentalist activities than any of his climbing.

Are you looking for any particular information?

I think he also coined the phrase in the 1980s, "John Wayne never wore lycra."

A friend of mine was at the climbing wall at the metolius factory when he saw something stuck in the padding on the floor. He reached down and picked it up and it was Ron Kauk's drivers license. Pretty cool...Not sure if he ever gave it back to him though......

Ron Kauk is the man hes in all the Masters of stone I belive. Magic Line route, and wacthing him do Midnight Lighting (cant remember wich tape) is awesome. He kicks butt on sport, Bigwall, and extreme big wall like the Karakorm range. hes also done alot for climbing in Yos. and many other places by dealing with Goverment BS.

The only place I have heard of him is at http://www.wigginsrigging.com/site_pages/mi2.htm

Did a pretty good job in the movie. Wish I could have been in his position. That looks fun.

If you are interested in seeing a lot more of Ron Kauk, buy the DVD "Yosemite Ascending Rhythm." It is NOT another high speed, mind numbing, pounding sound track climbing video. It is a piece of art, a picture of Ron and his personal world view. His respect for Yosemite and nature shines through. And as a bonus, you do get to see him climbing some of the most beautiful lines in the Valley.

Ron Kauk is the man, total freakin' stud and infinitely cool. Up there with Peter Croft for me.

While everything attributed to him is true (particularly the "John Wayne never wore lycra" comment after winning a bouldering comp in blue jeans in the 80's) one comment: if you've read John Roskelley's telling of the events on Uli Biaho he says that he recruited Ron for the trip because of his free climbing prowess but that Ron was scared shitless due to the dangers of the climb and after being hit square in the arm with a toaster sized block of ice threatened to tie off the lead rope (running to Roskelley) and rap off at that moment. John Roskelley called him various names and told him to stop being an [expletive] and that they eventually summited but never climbed together again - although that's true of a lot of Roskelley's partners...
