Can anyone tell me if the Summit Gym is top roped or do climbers have to bring their own ropes? My partner and I are making a flying visit to Malaysia en route to Oz (from London) and we figured we might as well check out first and KL's only, climbing gym. I've checked out the Summit's webpage but it doesn't really tell you very much.

Any info would be nice. Thanks.

I believe almost all climbs have topropes on them, expect the new lead well they set about a month ago, its too overhanging for them to set up a safe toprope! It's a fun place, if you can find it, its quite far away from KL, so cab drivers probably wont want to take you (30 minute drive atleast?). How long are you spending here?

You could probably find someone in KL with a car and actually get out to Batu Caves to climb something real too! I'm not sure how easy that is. If you can get to the summit you might be able to meet someone there. If you can rent your own car (if you don't want to try your luck with cabs) the drive there is relatively easy.

majority of routes in summit are on toprope..not worth lugging your own ropes around for just 2 or so routes on the steep leading wall..don't forget that summit is not the only wall in malaysia now..try genting highlands..but thats further!

We're trying to travel light, and since we'll be climbing with buddies in Oz, we've decided to leave ropes and most of the metalwork at home. We'll probably be packing some quickdraws and cams/nuts tho.

Anyway, thanks for your input and maybe we'll see you at the Summit! We'll be in Malaysia from Nov. 17.

I went to summit over the summer, it was ok.. All of the routes are top-roped, and only like two or three are lead.. And dont worry about the cost and stuff.. It's pretty flexible.. Have fun..
