Hullo all. Bought rock shoes (finally) and would love to know if anyone has any tricks to keep their shoes from becoming pungent and whiffy? Thanks!

To kill the little bacterium: freeze the boots in the freezer. Or maybe try washing the boots with a Triclosan-fortified soap (like, you know, an anti-bacterial dish soap). Or try searching this topic's subject. There are other posts and answers to it.

Unfortunately, bacteria are not killed by low temperatures! Only by high ones! try to boil your shoes or put'em in the microwave!

Prevention can go a long way. Only wear them while on the rock. Air them out all other times. Stuff newspaper in them if not using them for a long while.

Air them out until they are dry every time after you wear them. Stuffing them in your pack all sweaty and wet will generate nasty stink. Bowling shoe disinfectant works wonders also. [ This Message was edited by: tradguy on 2002-10-24 07:42 ]

Put drier sheets in them after you climb. They smell good and it keeps them soft.

The climbing gym I go to has Lysol antiseptic in the rest room. I just give my shoes a squirt after I climb. At least they smell good until the stuff wears off.

- Baking Soda - I've heard freezing your shoes helps, but haven't tried that myself - Lysol

Maybe I'm totally wrong, but wouldn't freezing shoes destroy the rubber real quick?

This doesn't help the shoes, but it does help your feet, use the strydex dace wipe thingies on your feet, they stop your feet from smelling no matter how bad your shoes are.

I use little bags of cedar chips. You can get these at the big kitchen/bath stores in a six-pack. They fit perfectly inside the shoes, and boy, do they ever WORK! My husband had feet so stinky I would literally step away from him in the gym when he took them off, and uggh, those hanging belays...A few days of these cedar thingies and that is now history! I tell you, these things are awesome!

here are a couple ideas: 1.) Wear sox 2.) get nylons cut off the footies, put potpourri, cedar chips or maybe bakinsoda (never tried the baking soda thing though) in em and tie them shut, put them in your shoes when you are not climbing 3.) Get over it

The more you do to your shoes with chemicals, the more risk you run of shortening their lifespan. Why worry about the smell? One of the guys I climb with is proud of the millions of new lifeforms he has created, although every time he puts them on, there is a disturbance in the force as if millions of voices cry out and are suddenly silenced.
