How long of a tail should I leave when making loops out of 6mm nylon accessory cord using double fisherman's? Right now I only have about 1" of tail after setting the knot firmly, and it was my understanding they didn't really need any more than that.

Personally I leave about 3 inches atleast.I seem more comfortable with that than with an inch......those things cinch up pretty tight, but still wouldnt trust 1 inch.

For 6mm cord that sounds about right. For bend knots I tend to leave tails that are each about the width of the knot. Just keep an eye on the tails and re-tie if you notice it creeping.

IIRC a double fisherman's in 6mm ends up being about 1-1.25" wide after its loaded and tightened.

Oh, and hi everyone! ...been lurking, but finally registered yesterday.

It might depend upon HOW you set it: e.g., you might use pliers
to grip one end of a Strangle component and pull on its SPart to set each
half, and then load the sling to set the Strangles into/against each other.
So, with an initial short end, such loading of it will lengthen it
a little.

The limited search and rescue work I did always said use 10cm about 3 inch tails.

I contacted Bluewater and asked them, and they said no less than 2" of tail.

I remember reading somewhere that the recommended tail for most knots was 3 times the diameter of the material being tied.

I tried a google search but I can't find the source.
