Climb is right. Everybody wants a friggin hand out now a days. I've been working for as long as I can remember. At 15 I was working for McD's, they may be the devil but they take pretty much anybody. One questions for you, woudl you relaly trust gear some total stanger was willing to GIVE you, out of the "kindness" of their heart? Sorry, I'd be a little hesitant.

I would be extemely suspect of gear someone was willing to give away for free. Why don't they want it anymore? Is it blown? Broken? Used and abused? If your life depends on the pieces of equipment you are using do you want taht equipment to be new stuff you just bought, or used goods some stranger gave you for free. How much is your life worth?

Save up for a chalkbag and a pair of shoes. I remember when I was 14 I got a job at a blueberry farm for $3 an hour. I worked all summer just for a pair of shoes and a chalkbag. (This was only 4 years ago) Start climbing in gyms first. Besides, until you have enough experieence to be safe, you don't need anything else...

good luck! All you really need is shoes, chalk bag, and a harness. your looking at less than $200 for some nice gear. You can always get second hand shoes (maybe free) from the local rock gym (germs....no extra charge). Then your looking at less than $100! Try joining a football or soccer team for that. This sport can be inexpensive depending on what you do. Just by these things, then go with people who know what they are doing. Then buy gear slowly as your skill improves. It's not so bad if you get things one at a time. I try to buy at least one thing every pay day. I started buying gear when I was 15. You can do it also. If your in my area drop me a line. I'd be glad to go climbing with you.

I have a full rack and a good paying job. However, if any one is interested in giving ME any brand new cams w/ tags still attached, I will consider accepting them. Please PM me w/ a photo. rrrADAM

NEVER accept free gear from anybody that you dotn know well enough or are willing to trust your life too. You dotn know where the gear is coming from, if it is damaged etc. Most climbers in general dotn have all that much money so I doubt you will find any that are giving their gear away. So my advice is and we have all been there at one point, is to suck it up get even a job that makes you want to puke, and buy stuff little by little. You can get second hand shoes at climbing schools, some gyms, and even ebay, chalkbags are cheap, and maybe even borow a friends crashpad for a day and do some bouldering. A harness isnt that expensve, and beginneers should learn to get comfortable on the rock before they worry about trying ot lead, so unless you are at that point then i wouldnt suggest looking to buy a set of cams yet anyway. But please its better to have to wait to afford new gear than it is to die, so dotn take shortcuts and accept used gear unless you know the true history of each and every piece of pro.

A job at an outdoor store helps considerably too because you can get a discount on gear directly from the companies. Just a thought.

Hey, you know what you should do- get a job that has to do with climbing. For example, this summer, at 16, i was a rock climbing instructor. One of the real benefits of this job gear-wise was the discount factor. I get like 30% off from many outdoor stores because of its affiliation with climbing stores. These discounts really have saved me like hundreds of dollars. Give it a try. Or you could even work at a store that sells climbing gear and you're bound to get an employee's discount. Hope that helped.
