Hey guys! I'm new to the forum, my name is Evan.

I've been rock climbing for a little while in a gym with a friend of mine, and we were thinking of hiking on the Appalachian Trail again this summer but do a little bit of climbing too.
I've been told there is quite a bit of bouldering to do there given just a little bit of off-trail searching, but we wanted to do some top-roping--or maybe tying off to a tree or something and using that.
What kind of gear would I need to do that?

The AT is 2,100 miles long. Along what part of it do you plan to climb? There's at least some quantity of AT bouldering in most of the 13 states it passes through. The best bouldering that comes to mind that's right on the trail itself is in PA. http://www.rockclimbing.com/routes/North_America/United_States/Pennsylvania/Southcentral_Region/Whisky_Springs/

Oh man, sorry. I guess that is kind of important, huh? Haha

I will be hiking near the southern entrance in Georgia. I will start at Springer Mountain and go to around Fontana Dam or so.

Its been years since I've hiked that portion but I seem to remember some really great boulders at Blood Mountain. If I remember right, there is even a shelter perched among the boulders on top of the mountain. Other than that area I don't remember much from Springer to the Nantahalla. Definitely worth bringing shoes and a chalk bag.

The southern portion of the AT in Virginia has some good bouldering, in fact the AT goes right through the bouldering area at McAfee's Knob, which has a high concentration of quality problems.

But, duhhh, you're going to be somewhere else so, uhhh, nevermind....

Do you really want to carry a rope with you while hiking the AT?

I would just look for some bouldering areas and bring my shoes.
