hey guys,
i've used many different brands of rope via friends, but this will be my first purchase. i've narrowed it down to two:
the new england glider 10.2

the mammut flash 10.5

they're almost identical in price with the options i want - superdry, bi-pattern. they're VERY similar, but the NE is a little lighter (and smaller obviously) while i can't deny the overall credibility of mammut. i just don't hear as much about the NE, particularly the glider, although what i have heard is good.
i'm stuck. what do you think?

Mammuts tend to be a lot fatter than other brands that advertise the same diameter.
I've used both NE and Mammut ropes, and I like'em both. My redpoint rope is actually a 9.6mm NE rope and it is really nice.
The Mammut will give you a softer catch, but the NE will last longer. I'd go with NE, personally. The lower weight, smaller diameter, and greater durability just sound like the best way to roll.

mammuts also tend to get pretty stiff over time also. i have a NE maxim for cragging that ive beat to shit over the last three years and its still in great shape. just about everone that uses it comments on the nice soft hand. several friends have mammuts and sometimes it feels like pushiing a pool cue throug the belay device----

I've never use the mammut. But I find they have good tough out sheaths that last much longer than many ropes. they are stiff, Most people I know have the Flash.

I've got a bi-pattern flash. I love it, but agree that it is a little stiff. Can't comment on the NE. If I don't do doubles next time, I'll likely opt for a Sterling Marathon.

Not a fan of Mamut...ropes get too fat with use.

You have to look at a lot of things and one of the things I look at is impact force. The higher this is the more abuse you receive on a fall. The first rope is 9.4 KN the second 9 KN.
Also you have to look at number of falls held the NE doesn't list this and the Mammut is 9-10.
Last you have price, look around and buy on sale when you can.

I have owned and liked Edelweiss.
I rate as follows:Beal, Stearling, Edelweiss they seem to last longer on the rock out here.

I have that mammut....nice rope...it is my wurkhorse craggin rope....still in good shape after 2+yrs

Between the two, I would go with the NE. I have heard the same about Mammut being too stiff.
If you can, look around for a Beal Edlinger 10.2. I think they changed a bit for this year, so I managed to find a duodry for 105 last year, so with some searching you might be able to find one.

I have that Edelweiss. Not an exceptional rope by any standard if you ask me. I much prefer my Flash. I need to go slimmer next time though.

Well, those numbers tell you a lot of other things too. The higher the impact force, the lower the static elongation, the lower the elongation on first fall, and most importantly, the higher the number of survived falls, then the longer the rope will last under general use. Edelweiss ropes tend to have short lifespans. I bought my 70m edelweiss as a single season rope, so I was willing to cut corners in durability for a light, full featured 70m rope.
Your mileage may vary.
