So do you see this as making it's way to the crags and local gyms? Has anyone actually tried this (and not gotten kicked out of a gym or chased by fire ants outside)?

As a former gymnast this method of sticking actually works really well. I've tried it with maple syrup as well, but for rock gyms and your local crags, it's probably not the best of ideas. When you use the honey/maple syrup in combo with chalk it just keeps on getting caked onto whatever your hanging from. In a rock gym it could prob be maintained, but scraping the holds off w/ a toothbrush or something, but outside, it could just becme a nuisance and an eyesore on the rock.

not to be too blunt and rude but that's the dumbest thing ever. its annoying enough to climb through chalk caked routes at the crag, I would hate to see them bet chalky and sticky and gross and slimy and no, don't even try it!

What are you talking about? A good honey coating would only enhance the culinary experience at the gym. Maybe you haven't tasted the holds at my gym, but they're all slimy and salty. Especially slimy after I'm done licking them all on my way up. My partner always complains when he doesn't get to go first, but whatever...

Dunno. Maybe you are on to something. I read a trip report here or elsewhere, wherein the party's gatorade spilled and soaked into their shoes. The next day the shoes were tacky to the touch and helped them get the onsight FFA on some wicked A6...or something.

Thanks again wonderwoman, you always seem to help me with what should be so obvious. I'm not sure how I could have neglected the culinary aspects of climbing. Although I don't go to a gym, it could be better to be licking my way up a honey coated crack than the usual lichen I have been dealing with the past 6 years.
So I guess by all means sweeten up the crags, but please use all organic honey. I don't need to be increasing my msg intake.
Maybe I'll try out some plumb sauce later this afternoon, I've been in the mood for Thai food lately. SmileWinkSmile

i could see honey pretty much destroying outdoor holds. i dont climb in gyms so i dont care what goes on in there. ever try rubbing alcohol??? a little on your hands before chalking up keeps the chalk on better and longer. lets keep honey for tea and a sugar high.

even if it could be maintained...is it really necessary? I already think that chalk is severally overused by lots of climbers...and ends up being more of a psychological boost then anything else.

Yeah, i replaced all my chalk use with a swallow of PBR before a hard or scary pitch. It gives me all the psycho boost I need.

The very thought of someone touching their tongue to a gym climbing hold is so gross. ew.

But the idea of honey - please don't, all those who are thinking they might try it. Or if you must, at least please don't on routes other people might climb or that won't get rained clean.

Still, the euros originally used to use that stuff in Fontainblaue, I can't remember what it was called - pouf, or something - but it was some sort tree resin, I think. Sounds like a similar concept as with honey.

I seem to recall reading that it's very popular in Font to use some sort of sticky stuff when bouldering. I forget what it's called and am too lazy to go looking, but this idea might not be as idiotic as it sounds... CrazyCrazy

If one wants something sticky for their hands, try that foam fill expandable spray in foam. A little of that on your hands and you could traverse a featureless roof.

Got a little on my hands today using it. My fingers kept sticking to anything they touched, including other fingers.

I think refixable spray glue might work better. There is even a brand that is somewhat biodegradable. But seriously, I don't think we need to start putting more crap on the rock. I think chalk is already too much!

Ive actually been thinking of a way to modify a beer cozy so I can clip it to the back of my harness. It doesn't seem too difficult other than how to keep the beer from spilling on roofs and steep pitches.

normally I wouldn't even think about being serious... about anything. But I would probably get seriously mad if someone started crappin up my crag with honey or glue or syrup or really anything.

well provided that you're still on the chalk, you're gonna have to double bag it...ahem..double chalk bag it that is. gravity should save your beer from spilling on overhangs and steeps. You can even find a bag big enough to fit one of them foam thingies to keep that beer cold.

haha I think I'm gonna bring that tech to the gym. ...pause take a sip while I'm clippin in on the roof on friday nights.
