Joshua Tree in September

Hello,

I am a german student and just finished my studies in Zürich. Now I have been given the opportunity to visit the US for two and a half weeks.
Naturally I could not resist to add a few days in the Joshua Tree National Park but I am lacking a climbing partner. Therefore I'm looking for someone who wants to climb some beautiful routes with me, maybe a group of climbers that I can join.

I've planned to enter the park on Sept 17th and leave it on Sept 20th.
I cannot bring a lot of gear with me, probably a few cams and nuts, but no rope. On lead I don't expect to climb harder than 5.6, maybe 5.7 (I'm not familiar with the american grading system at all, therefore a little unsure here), following a 5.9 shouldn't be a problem. Up to now I have been climbing mainly in the swiss alps.

bye
Johannes

Hi,

thanks for Your reply. The dates for my visit are now definitive (17.9.-20.9., ... 24.9. and later would not have been possible for me right from the beginning anyway). Unsure

The description on this site sounds as if I might have good chances to find a partner by just going to Hidden Valley Campground and ask climbers there. Is that really a good idea?

bye
Johannes

Wow, yea hard core indeed. You might want to look at how many Kilometers you're driving and hiking, plus home many meters you're climbing, each day.

kilometers we're hiking are just long for the gould and half dome hikes.
Driving from lone pine to vegas with a visit of death valley, the next day vegas - grand canyon -vegas and the folowwing day vegas - joshua, that's hard...

any suggestions for nice toprope routes or routes that are bolted? As you can see we are in need of quiet a lot of gear so taking friends/nuts/hexes with me is too much for the max weight of our trip ...

Suggestions for clark canyon are also welcome!

i am an american living in switzerland

being raised on crack-climbing at joshua tree

i know the skills that a climber from switzerland Zurich brings with him, he or she is not ready for to much of american climbing

it is not schlieren!!!!!!

start small and lower your expectations if you want to have your ego intact when you leave america

as for gear bring as much as you can or buy a bunch when you are in california, you will need it!!!!!!

that said, i send you the energy and spirit you will need for this adventure, it will change your life! you will not want to come back here after being around the american climbing scene!!!

so remember you are in for the as kicking of your life!!!!!

oh one last thing it is to hot there in sep for climbing!!!!!

i could be wrong though!

the mountains i'll be doing aren't climbing, just class 2 or class 3 "hiking". The climbing is for fun, as entertainment and as a restday for our feet...

River Gorge is cool for sportclimbing but to much in the 5.10 zone, 5.9 or less would be loved by me!

Joshua Tree is just for some rest after the heavy days and nice days for bouldering, at least better than venice beach or something, ok the girls can be loved but my climbersheart is looking forward to be asskicked :)

above 4000m it ain't hot no more i hope :)

Well, You made me really excited!
I decided to go to JT because it is so radically different than what we have here. I am aware, that it may turn out to be more different than I think. I'm curios how much my ass will hurt from the kick it gets there.

At least, my experience goes well beyond Schlieren! When I wrote about having climbed in the alps I really meant it.

Hmm, I should not have written the "probably" referring to the cams and nuts. I will bring with me all I have, but they are still not enough for proper protection on a clean route (actually, once in Norway they were, but there the strategy was to climb back halfway, remove the gear in the lower part and reuse it in the upper section).

Many thanks for your advice.

Johannes
