It's pretty much just personal preference.

You shouldn't use a wiregate for SEARCHING BEFORE YOU POST. Edited to actually answer your question. The only real downside of wiregates is that except for very specific and expensive carabiners (DMM Shield and WC Helium), you pretty much have to have a notched nose. You also, as you pointed out earlier, shouldn't use it in any situation in which a locker is preferred. Other than that, it's all preference.

USnavy wrote: Many wiregates have straight gates making them harder to clip then bent solid gates. Some solid gates seem to have a bit smoother gate action too. But the main thing is that its harder to find bent wiregates then it is to find bent solid gates. Actually, the recessed wire gates clip rather well I find. Better then most bent gates so a bent wiregate is not that useful. To make it clear, the wire gates are not flush with the outside of the biner but rather recessed by a bit less then 1/4". That makes the nose of the biner act a guide when clipping. The main thing I watch out for in wiregate biners is color. Since the biners are interchangeable for pro vs. rope side, I make sure they're a different color so as to not mix them up and risk nicks and dents in the rope basket of the rope side biner.

Some people say that the flat plane formed by the wire gate is more prone to catching on bolt heads than the round bar stock of a solid gate thereby making it easier for a wire gate to be inadvertently opened during rotation on a bolt hanger.

Offtopic, but i held a wild country Helium this weekend for the first time. Way light! Honestly, it felt as if I was holding a plastic biner. And that nose is brilliant. It is practical art, IMO. The one thing I hate about my BD wiregates is that the nose always catches on my harness loops or whatnot. If it werent for the fact that I have all the OP or BD biners that I could need right now, I would definitely drop the coin for the Heliums. Back to opening beer bottles with biners. Speaking of which, I dont see why you couldn't with a wiregate, but I have never tried.

racking stoppers- at least in my case. damn near lost half of mine when they worked their way off a wiregate some years back. only rack 'em on solid gates these days. otherwise, opening beer bottles is the only real limitation.

I second the limitation for racking stoppers. I always thought my partner was quirky for racking his stoppers on a solid gate, until this year when I lost a couple of stoppers from racking on a wire gate.

I've never had an issue with my stoppers on a wire gate. What's the problem with it? Stoppers make up almost my entire rack so dropping them is a big no no.

Question: What's the problem with racking stoppers on wiregates??? Answer: Stoppers racked on wiregates attract Gremlins who attack my rack and randomly unclip one or two. Solid gates keep the gremlins away. YMMV.

For opening beer bottles, you must use the extra-super-special version:

This is complete and utter BULLSHIT jay. In fact, 90% of the bottles I open are done with the Neutrino I keep my truck keys on. The other 10% are opened with what ever is at hand, with bonus points for successfully using an item perceived to be the least likely to pop the top. I expected beter from you.
