Hey there,Does anybody know which organization sets the compulsory standards for the retail of US climbing equipment.

I can't imagine that there are standards set forth for the retail sale of climbing gear.
There are plenty on the construction/rating/usage, though.

I suppose it is a bit of a mouthful, what i'm trying to find out is weather in the US its compulsory for climbing equipment manufactures to adhere to UIAA standards. Because in Europe UIAA standards are an added extra and only CEN standards are compulsory.
Hope this makes more sense.

No. If you look around at some of the "B-list" companies you'll find some of the hardware does not carry UIAA or CE certification. Also, some things, like belay devices, are not covered by UIAA/CE testing so none of them have certifications (as far as I know).
Occasionally you'll find companies (like Frendo) who will mark their gear as certified when they are not.

CEN is based on UIAA and is essentially the same thing as far as testing goes. No legal requirement exists in the US. However, since the 800 lb. gorilla (REI) will only sell UIAA approved gear, it pretty much became a necessity for all climbing products sold in the US to get certified.
