Today I met (and got to belay) Ian Wade!! He did the 2nd ascent of Half Dome (the first people who climbed it ended up being rescued near the top ... does that still count as a first ascent??), and the 4th ascent of Fitz Roy (Patagonia) and climbed Everest in 1990. He's also climbed the North Face of the Eiger. He also got to meet Heinrich Harrer (who wrote "The White Spider" and made the first ascent of the Eiger). What struck me most about this bloke is that he is so amazingly modest. He downplayed his achievements in a gentle way (ie. ".... then we had to scramble over the rocks for a little while..." - when talking about 28,000 feet up on Everest) and was so sincere about it all. He is incredibly accomplished and so quiet about it all. I feel very inspired!! Is there a difference, do you think, between today's climbers and climbers of the "old school"? In terms of attitude?? Interesting.

Good for you, that must have been amazing talking to that guy. Seems like most really accomplished climbers are pretty humble & sincere. Even Sharma and Potter today are the same way.
