I just ordered from gearexpress.com today. I'll let you know how it goes. I've been happy with shorelinemtn.com and linkupgear.com, too.

I live too close to Summit Hut to need to order from them, but I can verify they have great in store customer servide and an awesome inventory.

Try this retailer www.mec.ca
They are Canadian and are well respected, plus all you Americans get at leat an extra 50% on your dollar due to the exchange rate differences. Stuff is high quality and very reasonably priced because they are non-profit.

Don't rule out www.campmor.com

campmor is very good at cheap. they don't always have a ton of climbing gear available online, but most of their stuff is on sale. they always have a ton of other crucial stuff on sale too.

rei-outlet.com often has blems and 2nds

I'll put in a plug for Shoreline, www.shorelinemtn.com which has already been mentioned. Their shop is close to where I live and I buy virtually all of my gear there. Great people, great service.

Hey everyone, please be carefull in making online purchases of climbing gear. A lot of the retailers online that sell at wholesale prices are going to put a lot of the climbing industry out of buisness, this includes the companies making the products your buying from the online dealers. These discount dealers are primarily foreign and are making a killing off of several loop holes in international commerce. Not only is this practice bad for the big companies, it also threatens the jobs of employees of small retailers and pro-shops. too many people are going into these honest shops to try on some climbing shoes only to run home to buy them online. Please refrain from this practice, if you care about climbing at all.

Thanks, sorry for preaching.

I could not agree more. One other thing to think about is how do you really know the history of the gear you are buying? At the store I work at we havea zero return policy on all climbing gear so the gear comes from the manufacturer to our shelf to the consumer. Who is to say that all of these online retailers do the same? Besides what if you need a piece of gear and do not have time to wait for it to be shipped? And since you never supported your local shope they went out of business? Basically get to know the people at your shop and buy from them.

Nah, I don't agree, Chimp. Most of them have a retail store front presence and the web is just another avenue to reach customers. There was an article written in Climbing about this a few months ago that spurred some conversation about losing business to over sea retailers, but those businesses still account for a very small percentage of climbing gear sales coming from the US.

Barrabes.com is the leading foreign retailer, and this may be the only case where your argument applies. They have access to a limited range of products (mainly climbing shoes) that they can purchase directly from the manufacturer at a lower cost than US retailers can buy--therefore Barrabes has a much greater profit margin on these items and can sell them for significantly less on their website to US customers. This is about the only case where they actually have an unfair advantage. Otherwise, all retailers buy from the same manufacturer at nearly the same price (large volume discounts apply).

It's a free market, dude. I'll buy from whoever gives me the best value. I mainly buy from my local shop (yo, I'd like to give a shout out to the BOYZ at The 'Shack in the 602...word), but I've found some of the on-line retailers to be very easy to do business with. Shorelinemtn and gearexpress keep popping up as reputable vendors that ALSO have local store fronts. If they earn my business instead of my local shop, then it's because they are offering something that I can't get locally (whether that be service or a product). It's called capitolism.

Not all online retailers are evil foreign companies out to sabotage the American economy.

Some (like www.gearexpress.com) are small, local, American shops that have been around for a long time. They just used good business sense and changed with the times. Instead of relying on low volume and HUGE profit margin, they jumped on the net and started going for high volume, low profit. And they do a killer job, too! You will be hard pressed to find better service and deals anywhere.
