Hi, I hope everyone doesn't feel this is a bad question but what is trad? I have been climbing for 2 years and have no idea what this is. The first time i saw it was yesterday on this site.
If there is online info about this can you just point me at it.

Thanks everyone.

Traditional/ trad / trad climbing - n/adj Climbing that emphasizes longer routes and removable protection.

Try looking at the climbing terms some time.

try to not be an ass when your answering a valid question.

his definition is right, but ignore the connontation of the rest of his post. He is right in the fact that the Climbing Term section has quite a bit of valuble info. hope this helps

Tommyf,
I think WVs point was that the comment at the end of your original post "try reading the terms sometimes.." came across as a bit snotty.
Now let's all just chill out & get back to climbing.

What is trad?

Actually it's my favourite beer here in Alberta, damn good stuff. Especially after a long day of trad climbing.

You will know that an established climb is trad if you start up the thing with a rack of quickdraws--and don't find anything to clip into before you get to the top.

Trad = when you place your own gear ie; cams, nuts, ect into the rock and then clip the rope into the gear as you climb. The second climber then removes them as he passes by them.

cams http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=12347&bmUID=1037869113205

nuts

Hope this helps

hey, dont diss people trying to help. offcourse he could just have looked it up in the climbing terms on this site, but not many people look all the way through the menu when they find what they were looking for. he probably wasn avare that a glossary exists. give the newbie a break.

Trad is classic long free routes, single pitch crack climbs, mixed routes and even some bolted routes.

Just because a route has a bolt on it or is even all bolted doesn't make it a sport climb. Kind of hard to call the Bachar-Yerian a sport climb just because it has bolts.

Trad climbing is about pushing yourself physically as well as mentally with possible consequences as opposed to sport climbing that primarily focuses on the physical aspect of the sport with little to no dangers involved.
