T-shirts to protect tree?

Hey so I like to slackline on campus between classes and I've been thinking about using t-shirts to protect trees instead of cardboard. Currently I have to walk to the cafeteria and get cardboard out of the garbage then walk to my slacklining spot. I've got a bunch of old t-shirts lying around and I figure it would be a lot more convenient to just carry those around in my pack. Anyone ever try this? Are the t-shirts enough to protect the tree or too thin?

I would fold the t-shirt over a few times to thicken the padding, but you only really need it to be a couple inches wide, so that wouldn't be a problem. I think they'd do fine.

i use 'em- had a bunch in the back of the truck one day instead of cardboard- seem to work just fine as long as you fold them a couple times.

Wouldnt a strip of Carpet work better, be easier to carry in a pack, and last longer? I bet you can go to any carpet store and find a 3' x 4" piece of carpet in there garbage bin out back...

towels work as well and are easy to carry around. a nice cheap bath sheet will more than suffice

I use towels as well, but if you go to a Uhaul you can buy their big blankets for pretty cheap and cut them up.

I use foam sitting pads. They might not be the most durable ones, but they barely have any weight nor cost much. Perfekt for the days when you are on a hike:) Otherwise: Carpet is the very best thing.

I found some old sleeping pads at a garage sale for a buck. Real cheap, goes around the tree just fine, I can even fold them over for better padding when I have a longer line set up.

But then what do you do with your t-shirt when you want to expose your manly abdominals to all the onlookers?
