Hi everyone. I am 22 and looking to get into rock climbing. I watch Man vs. Wild a lot and watch Bear do it and think it looks pretty cool. Anyway, I have no idea how to get into rock climbing. I'm guessing there's more to it than just finding a rockface and climbing it(i.e. safety measures, equipment, etc.).

first, never admit to watching Man v. Wild second, think about taking an intro class at a gym if there's one nearby

first thing i would do is go to a local gym and test it out. you would probably start out with bouldering which is like rock climbing but not as high and with no gear. you should probably take a run at that and see if your interested and if you are you would probably invest in some shoes. madrockclimbing.com has a outlet with pretty cheap shoes but they ran out of sizes. then the next step would to either read a book or learn the more basic things such as top rope. you could probably find someone at the gym to show you the ropes, just make sure they are showing you the right step. but for now just look into bouldering as it the most simple form of climbing(no gear). thats how i got started then i read more into it from several books off amazon. then i got a harness and top roped then i started to practice lead at the gym. give it a shot just dont spend too much money on anything unless your sure your going to stay with it

Gyms are the easiest way to learn things in a controlled environment. So I would start by looking for a local climbing gym. As far as gear goes, most gyms have rental gear (shoes, chalk, harness, etc.). When you start buying gear, I would say to start with shoes and chalk, then a harness. If you become friends with people who own ropes, you won't need to buy one for a while. I've been climbing for 4ish years and bought my first rope just a few months ago.

I love man vs wild! that guy does exactly what you shouldn't do in survival situations, and eats the most disgusting things! any way, climbing. yeah, find someone that already does it and learn, or take lessons at a gym. gym climbing is a really safe and easy way to get into the sport, and you can rent the gear to see if you actually like the sport or not.
